POLISHED TOENAILS
NEW YORK’S PROMISED CRAZE. BARE FEET AND SANDALS. “ What next ? ” replied an officer on ths steamer Port Denison, when asked concernilng the latest New York crazes. “Why, the women threaten to wear open sandals, and display manicured toenails.” This officer, of the-steamer Port Denison, which arrived at Sydney last week, was glad to leave America. “If I had to stay long in New York,” he said, “why the women would drive me mad. “Just imagine it. Snow and ice everywhere. Can’t pour out a drink without heating the decanter and on shore fashion crazy women with bare chests, and skirts no lower than the knee.” It was then that tho officer made mention of “the advanced idea”—the turning down of stockings below the knee. “What next ?” the officer was asked. “What more do you want ?” he replied. “Still there is going to be a next. Leading women in the New York world of fashion threaten that when the weather becomes warmer they will wear sandals, open in front, and no stockings. There will be a liberal display of toes, so they say. Clipped short, and highly-polished toenails will ba a woman’s pride. Clean hands, they say, and why not clean feet ?”
