ANGLICAN CHURCH
THE GENERAL SYNOD. WOMEN ADMITTED TO CHURCH COUNCIL. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 7. At the meeting of the General Synod today the Primate moved, “That wherein it was resolved by the Lambeth Conference that women should be admitted to those councils of the Church to which laymen are admitted on equal terms, the Synod amend the canons to provide to provide that the terms layman,’ ‘vestryman,’ synodman,’ ‘parishioner,’ and ‘marshall’ include persons of either sex.” Archbishop Julius traced the history of the fight for women’s rights in Church affairs. He said it was time the whole matter was settled once and for all. It was no good beating about the bush or reaching the goal by imperceptible degrees. They might just as well go the whole length, of the advice given by Lambeth and settle the matter at once. Bishop Averill seconded the motion. Mr H. D. Andrews (Christchurch) feared that the hill, if passed, would have a deterrent effect in men joining the councils of the Church, and that it might give the clergy undue influence in the councils of the Church, because women, were more subject to the influence of the clergy than men were. The bill was passed on the voices, went through all stages, and was finally passed.
