COUNTY COUNCIL

SOUTHLAND. The monthly meeting of the Southland County Council on Friday was attended by Councillors R. Baird (chairman), T. Fraser, C. Robertson, E. Bowmar, W. Clark, J. Turnbull and A. Stewart. CORRESPONDENCE. The Bank of New Zealand notified the Council that the associated banks had resolved to increase the rate of interest on all advances to local bodies to 7 per cent, as from June I.—Received. The Southland Motor Association inquired if the Council would be willing to erect direction, danger and school signs if supplied by Association.—Council to erect signs if provided.

W. J. Jones, Garston, wrote inquiring whether permission had been granted to Mr J. Soper of Garston to erect a gate on the main road between Garston and Fairlight. Such a gate had been erected and it seemed to the writer to be a peculiar thing for anyone to be allowed to erect a gate on a main arterial road against all the travelling public.—Mr Soper to be asked to show cause why the gate had been erected without the permission of the Council. A. R. Biondell, Waimatua, applied for extension of time in which to complete his contract on Nally’s road.—Referred to Finance Committee.

P. Hardiman, Pyramid, wrote requesting the Council to have the railway culvert, adjoining his property enlarged in order to enable it to carry away surplus water which had been backed on to his land.—Engineer to report.

John Sutherland, Eyre Creek, wrote requesting the Council to repair the road along Eyre Creek as promised.—The engineer was instructed to have the boundary of the road along Eyre Creek defined on the ground. A letter from John Rankin, Mataura, protested against the Council’s action in widening the ditch on Mclllwrick’s road as it would cause injury to his property.—Received.

R. Hamilton Waikawa, applied to have the road leading to his property repaired.—Refered to member for riding and engineer. C. E. Rowe, Mataura, wrote in connection with the bridges on Kyal's coal-pit road which were washed away by the 1913 flood. He urgently required a right-of-way to his property from the Hedgehope road and applied to have either of the bridges repaired. —No funds available.

Sharp Bros., farmers, Hedgehope, applied for permission to cut two outlet drains across the Hedgehope-Mabel road.—Engineer to inspect' with power to act. A petition signed by a number of ratepayers at Waimatuku Bush requested the Council to apply to have a grant of £4OO, £1 for £l, placed on the est : mates for the completion of McGaw*a road. —Grant to be applied for. Several ratepayers of Long Bush wrote drawing attention to the unsatisfactory state of Quelch’s road and requested that it be immediately repaired.—Referred to member for riding and engineer. E. S. Joff wrote in connection with Quertier and Elliott’s road, Otaria, and stated that although application had been made to have the road placed in order nothing had so far been done. Referred to member for riding and engineer. The County Engineer reported upon an application made by the Borough Council to have a portion of the low roadway extending from the western end of the Tweed street bridge to the rifle range embankment, raised to the level of the tramway embankment at an estimated cost of £650. The report recommended that the south-eastern fac« of the embankment wall be repacked and strengthened with concrete at an estimated cost of £4OO. The value of the Borough and Prison Department’s interests protected by this work would be much greater than the County Council’s and he thought that £5O would be a fair contribution for the Council to make.—Report adopted and copy to be forwarded to the Borough Council. A petition signed by ratepayers of Otaria, Pukerau and Oteramika districts requested the Council to open a new road approximately 30 chains from the road that now intersected section 26, block 6, through a portion of lot 2 of section 1, block 6, Waikaia. For dairymen around Oteramika it would provide a level and shorter road to the Pukerau Dairy Factory.—Referred to member for riding and engineer for consideration.

It was resolved that the application of the Tokonui Domain Board ,for permission to erect a swing gate on the roadline on the east side of the Domain grounds be granted übject to the following condition: That the roadline be gravelled for a distance of half a chain on each side of the gate and that a board be placed on each ride of the gate notifying that the road was a public one.

The Council agreed to accept Mr John Norton’s offer to pay him £lOO for the right to make a road one chain wide through lot 10, block 3, section 135, Hokonui Sub-dis-trict, the Council to erect a good fence and to secure the watercourse to Mr Norton free of cost.
