SOUTHLAND. The monthly meeting of the Southland County Council was held yesterday, then being present: Councillors R. Baird (chair man), Fraser, C. Roberteon, W. Clarke, J. Turnbull, A. Stewart, W. Norman and K. G. McKenzie . Leave of absence was gran* ted to Councillor E. Bowmar. The Southland Hospital Board wrote stating that the Council’s liability for the ensuing year would be £ll,lBO 17e 4d. A movement had been commenced with the object of establishing a Tapanui County, and George Howat wrote stating that a deputation would wait upon the Council. The condition of the Grove Bush-Spring-hills road was complained of in a letter from Kilkelly Bros., and it was decided to carry out tfae necessary repairs if possible. Two settlers at Redan, Wyndham, renewed- their application for the metalling of McDonald’s road. Grierson that the Council would carry out the work of cutting the Lowboume-Bry-done ditch. The engineer was instructed to put on a man to clean a ditch at Mrs Healey’s expense. The ditch was adjoining A. MoBean’s property, Dipton. It was decided, upon the inspector’s report, to strengthen the Pyramid bridge t® make it safe for a load of from 30 to 40 hundredweight. The attention of the Council was drawn to the gorse growing on section 30, block 2, Collingwood, and the inspector was given power to act. The state of the Chatton-Pyramid road was referred to by Mr James Horn, M.P., in a letter to Councillor Turnbull. The writer stated that the road was almost impassable in the winter. —The engineer was instructed to inspect and report. It was decided that all owners of land sub-divided into 5 acres or under be compelled to gravel and form roade. The following tenders were accepted:—, Tfigh and Rata streets, Newfield, ditching, J. Ryan, £22 8s lOd; Underwood to Wal- ; lacetown main road, maintenance, W. Dawson, £215; Woods and Mimihau road% maintenance, A. Perry, £47. Accounts amounting to £10,653 12s 7d were passed for payment.
