IRELAND
THE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS ENDORSED BY SIR EDWARD CARSON (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association). LONDON, May 12. The Belfast Newsletter publishes Sir Edward Carson’s statement entirely approving of Sir James Craig’s meeting with de Valera Having regard to the present state of daily murder, assassination and outrage in Ireland nobody should shirk interviews even with only a dim expectation that the interview might lead to some mitigation or cessation of the terrible state of affairs. In a fight following an ambush at Listowel, the.police shot three republicans and wounded several. Three hundred English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Catholic archbisops, bishops and clergy, and several Australians and South Africans entertained Archbishop Mannix at a banquet at the Cannon Street Hotel. The Bishop of Portsmouth, ’who presided, read a message fom the Vatican stating, 'The Holy Father joins with you all in wishing Archbishop Mannix God speed.” Archbishop Mannix, replying to the toast of his health, expressed thanks to all those who had been so good to him during his weary months in England, looking over at the shores of Ireland. He was going back to Australia a disappointed man, not having seen Ireland, but he was more anxious not to sell Ireland than to see her.
