INDIAN LABOUR
MAIN BODY MAN’S PROTEST. (Special to the Times. ) WELLINGTON, September 22. The complain; of a Main Body man who stated that he was being forced to carry his swag while coloured men worked in his own district, was read to the House by Mr A. D. McLeod (Wairarana). The Minister of Public Works promised lo inquire into the matter. He said a protest had been marie against the employment of a pang of Indians on road-making near Christchurch, but as a matter of fact no other labour had been available at the time, and the local people had been anxious that the work should proceed quickly. The Indians had worked on a co-opcrativc contract on the same conditions as anybody else. Mr Coates added that he would make inquiries on the point raised by Mr McLeod. The Indians were British subjects, and he did not care In ask them to suffer any indignity until the policy of the Government as to the number of them to he permitted to remain in New Zealand had been determined.
