HOCKEY CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL OPENING. For many months past the members of the local hockey clubs have been busy making preparations for a carnival in an endeavour to place the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association in a better financial position. The conditions under which ladies’ hockey hrs been played in Southland during recent years have been far from satisfactory. The Association's lack of funds has prevented it from organising representative matches and from providing many facilities which were urgently required to further (he interests of hockey. With such a commendable aim in view, it is little wonder that such ready support was forthcoming from the public when the carnival was officially opened by the Mayor, Mr John Stead, in the Victoria Hall yesterday afternoon. The Mayor said that it gave him a great deal of satisfaction to open the carnival. He referred to the excellent work accomplished by the girls during the war. He was also glad to know that the young people were interesting themselves in sport, and- expressed the hope that they would continue to do so. When the Southland Hockey Association was first formed some twenty years ago he had the honour of bejng president, and he remembered many good games played on Roche’s paddock. The object of the carnival was an excellent one, and ho hoped that the girls would be well repad for their efforts. Unless matches were arranged with other provinces, the sport lost much of its interest, and the standard of play deteriorated, as the players got into a settled groove. He was glad to see that the Association was so vigorous, and he would be delighted to know that the result of the carnival had exceeded the best expectations. During the afternoon and evening business was brisk. The appeals of the ladies were seldom refused, and the many side attractions were liberally patronised. The stalls were daintily decorated and were laden with articles which found ready purchasers. During the evening"the Hibernian Band, under the baton of Mr A. R. Wills, gave an excellent musical programme, which in addition to full band pieces, included a trumpet and trombone duet by Messrs A. R. Wills (conductor) and A. Wills, cornet solo by Mr W. Wildermoth and a cornet solo with band accompaniment by Bud Wills. The programme this evening will be given by Mr Sutherland’s party. The following were in charge of the various stalls:—Produce; Mrs Betteridge (College Club) ; Fancy stall: Mrs W. L)ey (Collegiate Ai ; Plain stall: Mrs Tnglis (Collegiate B) ; Sweets stall: Mrs Gerrard and Miss Lawson (High School); Soft drinks stall: Mr C. Yates; Tea-rooms; Miss* Walker ami Mrs A.
