At yesterday’s meeting of the A. and ?. Association a motion of condolence was carried in connection with the death of Mr William Rankin, of Underwood. A London Press Association cable states that Messrs Julius the Trvnrfrw* painter, and Richard Jack, have been elected members of the Royal Academy. The Chief Justice of New South Wales, the Hon. Adrian Knox, has been appointed a Privy Councillor, says a Sydney Press Association message. An interesting visitor to New Zealand at present is Professor T. A. Jaggar, who is in charge of the Observatory at Hawaii. He is accompanied by Mrs Jaggar. A Wellington Press Association telegram states: that Mr D. Robertson retired from the Public Service Commissionership yesterday and Mr W. R. Morris will assume the duties to-day. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, High Commissioner, will probably leave London for New Zealand about August. After taking rest he will probably settle in Auckland, where two of his sons have already taken up their residence. Dr. Alfred Willis, assistant-bishop of Tonga, arrived'in New Zealand from Nukualofa by the Navua. Dr. Willis, who is 84 years old, is proceeding to England to attend the Lambeth Conference. Ho has held the present position since 1902, and previously was Bishop of Honolulu for 30 years. A pleasant gathering took place at the warehouse of Messrs ScouDar and Chisholm on Thursday evening when the staff met to do honour to the manager, Mr F. Butterfield, who is retiring from the firm after ten years’ service, to enter into business on his own account in Qamaru. la presenting Mr Butterfield with a handsome travelling rug and silver-mounted inkstand, also a Douiton tea-service for Mrs Butterfield, the speaker (Mr J. Gillies) referred in eulogistic terms to the guest’s capabilities and worth, and to the amicable relationship that had always existed. Other speakers endorsed his remarks, and Mr Butterfield, who was taken by surprise, appropriately responded.
