MOTOR FATALITY

TRAGEDY NhAlt ASHBURTON. SOUTH LAN DEil KILLED. ASHBURTON, April 30. A fatal motoring accident occurred on ihe W:ik;:nui road, near Ashburton, yesterday, the motor car containing Mr Hay Smith, stockdealer, owner and driver of the car; Mr Frank Campbell, local manager of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company; and Mr George Hramley, a returned soldier, who lost a leg at the war. The latter escaocd uninjured, but Messrs Campbell and Smith were killed—the former outright, ami the latter died on admission to the Hospital. East GoreAfter disposing of ids business he was appointed agent at Riven-Gale for the National Mortgage and Agency Company, mid later accepted a positio> in the local branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. under Mr J. 11. Reed. As a result of his fine business capabilities he was transferred to Wyndham in charge of the local office. He did not stay there long as he was appointed to the managership of the company’s Ashburton branch, a position which he held until'the time of his death. Mr Campbell had just re-started work yesterday after being laid up for a week with influenza. The deceased was about 3S years of age, and was a son of Mr J. Campbell, of Dipton. Ho leaves a widow (a daughter of Mr Valentine, Bluff; and one daughter, about eight years of age, to mourn their loss. Mr Campbell was a keen .sportman and took a particularly keen interest in trotting.
