SOUTHLAND STOCK AND PRODUCE MARKET. Times Office, Friday, April 30. It is impossible to give any indication of the position of the stock market in regard to fats for the past week because no sale was held at Wallacetown and very little has been doing privately. There has been practically no sales of store cattle of any description with the exception of dairy cows. A few herds of these have been changing hands at from £l2 to £ls per head. A few northern buyers have been operating, and they have secured a considerable number of lambs of medium quality, ready to go on feed, prices ranging from 18/- to 21/6. Also, 4, 6, and 8tooth ewes have been sought after, and a number have been quitted at from 24/6 to 27/6 for delivery when trucks are available. Wethers have not been in demand to the extent of the other sorts. OATS.—The market is quiet and there is little disposition on the part of local buyers to operate except at lower prices than growers arc asking. Forward sellers in the North Island have recently dropped their prices, evidently believing that lower values will rule. Whether this will eventuate or not is a question, as the Southland farmers are to be reckoned with and they are at present firm holders. CHAFF.—Prime quality is worth £6 15/-, on trucks. POTATOES.-—Several purchases for prompt delivery have been made on the basis of £6, on trucks, sacks in, which is fully equal to the Canterbury price of £4 10/-, sacks extra. For later delivery it is difficult to state how the market will go, as suppliers in this district are not very large, and the future will largely depend on the Canterbury market. HEMP.—The market is not brisk, and London buyers decline to operate unless shipping can be definitely promised. Goodfair is worth about £36, on trucks, high-fair about £34, and low-fair about £32. RYEGRASS.—AIthough there is not a groat deal doing locally the market is very firm, and merchants have reason to believe that the purchases will turn out right, as exports are already being made to America and Australia. The quality of Southland seed this season is quite exceptional and would be hard to beat in any part of the world.
