With the idea of increasing the comfort of passengers at refreshment stations, the General Manager of Railways (Mr R. W. McVilly) has devised what may be described as a portable dumb waiter, as a supplement to the refreshment room, and mainly for the convenience of women, especially women with children who do not feel equal to the strain of forcing their way through the throng to the public buffet. The “dumb waiter” is compact to a degree; it runs so easily that it could be moved by a small child, and it will be taken along the platform to the various carriages, halting at each for the purpose of supplying the occupants with coffee, tea, sandwiches, j cakes, and such light refreshments. Big, bright, insulated copper urns, one at each I end of the waiter, will of themselves readily I serve to disclose the presence of the travelling refreshment room, which will be placed on commission this week at Marton, Palmerston North, Frankton Junction, Mercer, j Ashburton, Oamaru and Palmerston South. They were made at the Petone workshops and should prove a great boon to a large [section of the travelling public. The shortage of certain lines of drapery is so acute in Wanganui (says an exchange) that several drapery firms are now buying up country stores in order to secure stocks, and a number of such sales have been recorded lately.
