NOTES ON THE EVENTS. BY SIR MOORED. (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, August 15. The weather was favourable for the closing day at Addiction, but a strong breeze interfered with horses out to make Trotting Cup time. The track was in better order than on any of the preceding days, but has not yet settled down into best shape following on the deep ploughing. The attendance was good despite the fact that many North Islanders had already left for their homes. When proceedings opened for the Midwinter Handicap investments, Southland visitors favoured one or the other of the home representatives, J. Hunter's Balnainoan and Pettigrew’s Ben Bell. Balnamoan extinguished hia chance by breaking badly in the first hundred yards. Sol (Pringle) commenced well and soon held a strong lead from Wild Pedo, but the latter ■tack to his work despite one break, and eventually wore Pringle’s mount down to win cleverly by a length and a half with Ben Bell twenty yards away. Wild Pedo, by Wildmoor —Torpedrees (R. Emms) is a good trotter hailing from Blenheim. In the Federal Handicap J. Bryce always bad Miss Rolfe out in front and looked like winning easily, but Dillon Direct, by Harold Dilkm—Musgrove Maid (A. Butterfield), came with a great rattle and won an exciting finish by a neck. BreadaJhane was close Up. Birdwood broke early when in a good position and lost his chance. Silver Quick left his feet at the turn when dangerous. Legacy, who finished fifth, lost her place at the start, and otherwise would have troubled the winner. With the track in good order under the hot sun qualifying time for the New Zealand Trotting Cup was looked for. From a good start John Dillon mixed, Vice-Ad-miral showing the way to Moneymaker and ’Cello Sydney Wilkes. When the first mile was completed in 2.18 Vice-Admiral still led with Erin’s Queen and Moneymaker next, while Agathos bad broken and lost her chance. With a lap to go Admiral Wood was moving up fast. Racing down the back Vice-Admiral retired beaten, leaving Erin’s Queen in front from Admiral Wood and the bunch. At the home turn, Admiral Wood (J. Bryce, jun.,) held command from Trix Pointer (F. Holmes) and then came the bunch fighting for position. In a slashing finish the American-bred mare Trix Pointer, by Dcrnonio —Bally Pointer, defeated Admiral Wood by half a length. Moneymaker was four lengths off, just beating ’Cello Sydney Wilkes for third place with Sherwood next. The times were 4.32 4-5, 4.28, and 4.35 2-5. The placed horses had previously qualified for the big event in November.

The Addington Handicap produced a spirited wagering event for unhoppled trotters. Gay Wilkes started slowly. Imperial Grown went off smartly and Nelson Bingen left his feet in the .first part but then M’Uled down in fine style. Speeding down the back stretch in the last Jap Nelson Bingen headed Imperial Crown and then Whisht followed suit. The American stallion Nelson Bingen by Bingen—Suzzette Baron (J. Cockerill) led into the straight with Whisht in second place. Half-way down the running Whisht (J. Bryce) broke and Imperial Crown (N. L. Price) hotly chased Nelson Bingen but the favourite won nicely by over a length. Beta Peter was sis lengths off, third, just beating Whisht. The times were 4.40 4-5, 4.42 2-5, and 4-25.

The Islington Handicap created a great deal of interest as the smart, winner, Lord Minto had a chance to qualify for the Now Zealand Trotting Cup and there were some smart horses in the field. Captain Stanley was left badly. Moving to the straight the first time Harold Devon fell, all concerned escaping unhurt. The positions of the leaders were constantly changing, Alf McKinney, Rorke’s Drift and Lieutenant in turn holding the lead, with Colenut always close up. In the run to the judge, Colenut, by King Cole —Cocoanut (A. Hendrickson) won cleverly by a length front Lieutenant (R. Dunn I. Alf McKinney was some distance away and Rorke's Drift fourth. Dandy Chimes ( Bryce i who was coupled with the second horse, could not pace with the leaders. The favourite finished some distance away from the placed horses. Alf McKinney was disqualified for crossing and the third money went to Rorke’s Drift.

With the exception of Our Girl all the pacers in the Hcaihcote Handicap, an event for unhoppled pacers and trotters, misbehaved. Our Girl was in the picture to the far turn where she left her feet and retired. Gay Wilkes, by Marion Wilkes Alpha (F. Holmes' had a great race homo with Red Heather (A. Cox), beating the latter on the post although a section of the crowd resented the winner galloping in the last few strides. Nelsou Bingen, who was penalised three seconds, dwelt at the start and afterwards failed to quite get up.

Nancy Stair was first into the straight in the Lightning Handicap, but the field closed up and five speedy piicers moved to the judge abreast, in an exciting finish Imilius, by Rothschild-—lmperialism (R. McDonnell) \von by a bare half-length from John Dillon (B. .larden), with Nancy S* air (VV. Warren) a head away third half a length in front of Sympathy, followed by Dean Dillon a head off fifth.

The southern gelding Hectorata (J. Bryce, jun.), was one o fthe favourite selections for the Farewell Handicap, but he stumbled shortly after the start and lost all chance. Frank Tracey and Strategy made fast time to the straight, where Mintston, by Papanui—Mint (H. frost) arrived on the scene, eventually scoring comfortably by over a length from Frank Tracey, with Rorke’s Drift bea‘«ng Captain Stanley by half a length for tturcl money. ~C.J.C. JOTTINGS FROM CHRISTCHURCH. (By Sir Modred.) (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 15. When returning to Kiccarton last night from the city with a motor cycle and sidecar, two jockeys met with uu accident through a side-slip. W. Bush (the owner) escaped with minor injuries, but the Invercargill horseman, W. Robinson, was rendered unconscious and had his jaw broken. At latest advice the Rorke’s Drift Lodge horseman was progressing favourably. It is reported that Mr W. T. Hazlett is in treaty for the purchase of the well-known training quarters at Riccarton recently occupied by A. McAulay. It is understood in any case that some of the high-class Kilbroney youngsters owned by the President of the Southland Racing Club will ultimately find their way to Kiccarton to undergo their early education on the even tracks at the CJ.C. Headquarters. Small fields are expected in the jumping races of the concluding day of the Grand National meeting to-morrow. Signature, who is said to be equally at home over hurdles or the big country, has been left in the two principal jumping races and it must be remarked that he is well handicapped in each instance. Master Lupin is not too sound to race in the Lincoln Steeplechase and it is difficult to see how Polthogue can have a chance. Merry Lid holds a good jumper’s chance, but Gang ’Awa will carry the confidence of most of the investors. P. Hogan expects to get. his horses home by sea in the course of the next fortnight.
