RE-CAPTURED
SHORT-LIVED LIBERTY. Yesterday the police continued their search after Arthur Leo Beor Ashton, the prisoner who escaped from the expres on Thursday. About five o’clock on Thursday, they were informed that a man answering to the description of the prisoner, had been seen about 3.30 p.m. coming out of the bush and heading towards the Hokonuis. The police divided their forces, half going towards, Edendale and the other half following the trail towards the Hokonuis. Early yesterday afternoon Constable W. Barrett sighted the prisoner at Glencoe, half-way along the Hedgehope-Mataura road. The constable was not long in effecting a capture, and the party commenced their return. When captured Ashton had travelled about 12 miles from the scene of his escape. Inspector Fouhy never had any doubt that Ashton would be re-captured, as he had his men so situated that it was almost impossible for the prisoner to get clean away.
