EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The Southland Education Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs J. C. Thomson (chairman), P. de la Perrelle, J. Findlay, J. D. Trotter, F. W. Gresham, and J. MacGibbon. An apology for absence was received from Mr D. Gilchrist. It was decided to make grants as follow: —To Makarewa £3 10/- repairs to fence; Oreti Plains, not to exceed £4, gravelling grounds, and not to exceed £2 concreting both at teacher’s residence; Winton, £1 11/- repairs to tanks; Gore, £IOO towards improvements at grounds; Morton Mains siding, half cost of erection of a flagpole and supply of a New Zealand Ensign.

The Director of Manual Instruction reported that the first term for woodwork and cookery will finish in a fortnight, bringing to a close the course of instruction for all country classes at present in attendance. With the commencement of the new term the majority of the classes will be drawn from town schools, only those country schools in the vicinity of a centre being brought in during the winter. The Saturday classes for teachers’ instruction have now commenced work for the year, the total number in attendance 1 being 97. Adopted. The Architect reported having visited 33 schools during the month. —Adopted. The Truant Inspector reported that returns from 171 schools had been received during the month. These contained the names of 336 defaulters. The average percentage of attendance was 90.31. Adopted.
