THE PACIFIC PROBLEM

SIR JAMES ALLEN’S FEARS. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 2. In a speech at the annual meeting of the Navy League, Sir James Allen said that he viewed with considerable alarm the position in the Pacific. He looked with a good deal of suspicion on the occupation of the Marshall Islands by the Japanese. He hoped that Japan had no intention of spreading her wings over the Pacific, but he feared that there was a possibility. The Minister added that it was impossible to give any idea what the Dominion’s naval policy would be. Lord Jellicoe was on his way to give advice. “If we are to protect the seas,” he added, “every part of the Empire should take its share both in money and men.” He did not know what ships or machines would be required in the future. Regarding the air service, the Minister said that he thought it would be necessary to have a minimum establishment of experts in New Zealand to train men for defence if the need arose. The air machines could be used for other than military purposes. With regard to the naval matters and air service he asked the people to be patient until the opinion of the experts was available. At Wellington Robert Brassel, charged with selling liquor with a license, was fined £lO. —Press Association.
