S., Major (Dunedin). Robertson, L. C. (Dunedin) . SECOND-LIEUT. J. W. HINTON. Second Lieutenant John Wilkie Hinton, who has been admitted to hospital in England suffering from a gunshot wound in the thigh, is a son of Mr and Mrs D. Hinton, of Spey street, Invercargill. He went into camp in January’ of 1917, being attached to the Rifle Brigade. He was awarded his commission in Trcntham and sailed with the 31st Reinforcements. Lieutenant Hinton was born in Invercargill 23 years ago, and was educated at the Middle School, the 5.8.H.5., and the Otago University, where he graduated with the degree of Master o( Science. Lieutenant Hinton was a brilliant student: and was twice nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship. A brother, Rifleman F. Hinton, is nt present at Torquay waiting to return to New Zealand.

LAN C E-CO RP. A. J. GARFORTH, Lance-corporal Arthur John Garforth, who sustained a gunshot wound in the thigh on August 15, and has been admitted to hospital in France, enlisted with the 29th Reinforcement. Lance-corporal Garfqrth, who is a son of Mrs Henry Garforth, of Irk street, Gore, was born at Clinton, being educated there and at the Gore High School. After leaving school he joined the clerking staff of Messrs Dalgety and Co. at Gore. He enlisted in the early days of the war but failed to pass, so he signed on a troopship and made several voyages between this country and Egypt before succeeding in getting away as a soldier. He was a keen athlete, taking a prominent part in various football clubs. A few years ago he created considerable interest by winning a boxing tournament at Gore, his ability to give and receive punishment in the ring attracting the attention of sporting enthusiasts. PRIVATE W, J. FINN. Private William James Finn, reported wounded on Ist August, is the son of Mr and Mrs J. Finn, of Beaumont, Nightcaps. Private Finn has been admitted to hospital suffering from gunshot wounds in the back, but a cable which his parents received last week states that he has now been removed from the dangerously ill list. Born at Winton 27 years ago, Private Finn was educated at the Wrey’s Bush Convent and Opio Schools. Previous to his enlistment in the 4th Reinforcements (Wellington Infantry), he was engaged in. farm work. Two years ago Private Finn was wounded at Armentieres, and after spending a year in England, again joined his unit in France.
