TOWN COUNCIL

COMMITTEE REPORTS. Following are the reports to be submitted to the Town Council at its meeting tonight ; PUBLIC WORKS. The committee recommend; (!) That the Dalrymple road residents be informed in reply to their petition, that steps will be taken to see that the rubbish deposited in Dalrymple road tip will be covered over from time to time; (2: that subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the County' Council regarding control, the town engineer be instructed to cany out repairs to the Waihopai scenic reserve bridge, as recommended by him, at an estimated cost of £2O; (3) that permission be granted to Messrs Lewis and Co. and Undrili Bros, to lower their verandah blinds not more than sft 6in from the kerb; (4) that the Melrose Girls’ College Committee be informed that they will be granted the use of the reserve in Forth street, between Ness and Ythan streets from year to year, provided the Girls’ High School do not require it; (5 * that the gardener be authorised to carl in soil, and sow down in grass, the ornamental footpaths through the Albert Square plots, in the Gala street reserve, as recommended by him; (6) that the taxi-drivers be allowed to raise their fares as specified in their communication dated 3rd December, 1917, and that Mr Oswin be informed in accordance therewith; (7F that a claim for workmen’s compensation has been received from one of the Corporation carters, recommend that an allowance of half pay for the time he w r as laid up be granted without prejudice; (8) that all persons employed by the Corporation who own their own horses and dray, shall be required to satisfy the town clerk that he or his men arc covered by insurance against the risk of accident; (9) that all ratepayers who have not yet installed the sewerage connections in No. 2 area, be circularised, giving them final notice that they must connect within 28 days, failing which legal proceedings will be instituted forthwith; (10) that fresh tenders be invited for drain laying throughout Northend; (ID that E. Hodge’s original tender for the construction of the remainder of the Park drain be accepted at approximately £513, less value of frames, and that the money be provided: £250 out of the Feldwick income and the balance to be placed on next year’s estimates; (12) that the engineer be instructed to have the overgrowth on the Waihopai river cut back and trimmed. The committee report: (13) Having granted the sewerage connection loans to three ratepayers on the usual conditions; (14 having arranged for the cutting and supply of cocksfoot seed at lOd per pound from Messrs W. Malcy, E. Hodge and R. Young; (15) having held over the question of street alignment for further consideration; (16) having examined accounts amounting to £1470 os lOd and recommend they be paid. GAS, WATER AND TRAMS. The committee report: (1) Having received tenders as under: —Tramway contract No. 50, hardwood poles (4 tenders), recommend Messrs Munson and Sons at £375 be accepted, being the lowest tender, and complying with the conditions; (2) having accepted the offer of Messrs A. R. Harris and Co. for a half ton Edison Ward battery and chassis at £500; (3) that the new tramway award which comes into force on the 14th August makes it necessary to discontinue paying the war bonus to those tramway employees who come under its provisions, recommend therefore that the resolution passed by the Council on 39th November, 1916, be rescinded, so far as it applies to the said employees; (4) that under the new plumbers’ award now in force, and from which the Corporation is no longer exempted, the hours of work clause provides for a Saturday half-holiday, it is therefore recommended that Saturday afternoon be. observed as the half holiday in the gasworks department. The committee recommend: (51 That a site for the drinking fountain presented by Messrs A. and T. Burt, be found on or about the Band Rotunda; (6) that the South Invercargill Borough Council be asked whether it will agree to substitute electricity for gas, as an artificial light, under the terms of the gas agreement dated 28th February, 1907, for the sole purpose of supplying electric current to the Kew Hospital. The committee report: (7) Having authorised a requisition by the tram and electricity department for goods, etc. amounting to £l4l 3s; (S' having examined and certified account:; amounting to £2335 2s 3d and recommend they be paid. FINANCE. The committee report; (11 Having received and gone carefullj - into a claim to remit rates and consider if to be a case for the Financial Assistance Board ; (2 1 that half rates be allowed to an aged widow in straitened circumstances; (3) having received a notice from Mr W. Curran under the Fencing Act, 1908, relative to a fence proposed to be erected, recommend that his specification be accepted and the work carried out. The committee recommend: (4) That Mr Leigh be appointed to the position of cashier and that leave of absence be granted him for military service and that the usual allowance be paid; (5) that Mr Fraser be appointed on the permanent staff in Mr Leigh’s present position, but placed temporarily in charge of the cash department at a commencing salary of £IBO per an-

num; (6) that Mr McLean be transferred temporarily to the rates and rents department at £l6O per annum; (7) that Mr Peterson be transferred temporarily to the gas register at £l5O per annum. The • committee report: (S) That applications have been invited up to Thursday afternoon at 4 pun. for two temporary positions in the office at £l6O and £125 per annum respectively; (9) having held over for further consideration: (aI Pleasure Bay and (b) shell banks in estuary; (10) having examined and certified accounts amounting to £533 7s 5d and recommend that they be paid. ATHENAEUM. The committee recommend: (1) That the librarian be authorised to order from England books to the value of £25. The committee report: (2) Having examined accounts amounting to £SO 6s lOd, and recommend that they be paid. PARK. The committee recommend: (1) That the gardener be authorised to erect three or four seats in the rose gardens; (2) that the Y.M.C.A. be granted permission to hold a garden party in the Queen’s Park, adjoining the rose gardens on Coronation Avenue. The committee report: Having examined and certified accounts amounting to £52 14s and recommend that they be paid.
