Bluff has not had ,-uch a brisk period of shipping for many months, and the wharves are very busy at the present time. To-day (Saturdayi. no less than live boats will be handling cargo. The months of July and August, will be remembered by Bluff's waterside workers in what for some months has been a lean period. Ihe extra demand for hands is being partially met b> local business men who have gone to the rescue of the shipping companies, Ihey not only reap the beuetit of a substantial cheque, but also keep the money in the port. The Hinernoa is to load stores here to-day, and the Kotare from Dunedin brings a, freight of spirits. THE WEATHER. SUMMARY AND FORECAST. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. August 10. Mr Bates’ weather report; The barometer rose during Thursday night in the northern districts, and southerly winds prevailed, with increasing force. Scattered showers have fallen along the east coast of the North Island, but generally fair weather prevailed to-day. Present indications are for moderate to strong southerly winds, veering to westerly north-west of Now Plymouth and Castle Point, and freshening northeriies elsewhere. Fair to cloudy weather is probable, with increasing haze and cloudiness and unsettled conditions following generally. The barometer falls everywhere shortly.
