ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES
A NARROW ESCAPE. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, May 17. When the Auckland-Rotorua express was passing over Norton road level crossing at Frankton Junction this afternoon it dashed into a lorry driven by M. J. Carroll, who was engaged carting gravel in connection with alterations to the N.Z. Dairy Association’s factory nearby. Carroll had a most, marvellous escape from instant death. The engine struck the two horses attached to the lorry, killing then instantly and wrecking portion of the front of the lorry. Notwithstanding the Impact Carroll never lost his seat, and with the exception of losing some skin practically escaped injury of any sort. He did not notice the approaching train until too late.
A RETURNED SOLDIER VICTIM. Alfred Simon, of Myross Bush, a soldier who returned home some time ago, was last evening the victim of a motor accident in the vicinity of Lochiel. It appears that Simon, who was riding a motor cycle, was run down by a car somewhere about 7 o’clock, and that the car did not stop. The victim was removed to the Southland Hospital, where it was found that he was suffering from a compound fracture of the left leg. The necessary operation was performed and the patient is progressing satisfactorily.
