STEAMER COLLISION
REFLOATING OPERATIONS. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, March 5. fumping operations on the Arahnra were suspended at 4.30 yesterday on account of the high list that developed as the ship regained buoyancy. It was decided to wait for low tide for the ship to regain an even keel and take measures to prevent a further list. The vessel was again on an even keel this morning and pumping was resumed by the Terewhiti. Chains have been attached to the Terawhlti and Tuatea to help keep the Arahura in an upright position. A second diver has been sent from shore to accelerate the patching work on the vessel’s side. It is hoped to make an attempt at refloating on the afternoon tide. The sea is calm and the prospects are considered satisfactory.
EXCELLENT PROGRESS. WEATHER NOT SO FAVOURABLE. GISBORNE, March 5. Up to noon excellent progress was made with pumping, and the water was reduced to within 4ft or sft of the en-gine-room plates. A powerful stationary pump Is being installed to provide the vessel with independent means of coping with the water when she is refloated. Unfortunately the weather changed about mid-day, an easterly swell interfering with the moorings of the tugboats, and suspending diving operations. The engine-room staff is engaged blocking up the rivet holes, etc., as the water in the vessel is reduced.
