EXTENSION OF BRITISH FRONT
Whole of Somme Area Taken Over PRESIDENT WILSON SUMMONS SPECIAL SESSION 9lsfh Day of the War
The news this morning reports the steady retirement of the enemy from the region west of the Arras - Bapaume road. Bapaume is being used as a pivot from which the enemy troops are swinging back, evacuating step by step all the country to the north west. Fogs are a material help to the Germans, preventing aerial reconnaisance, which would he invaluable to Sir Douglas Haig at such a moment, when there is always a possibility of turning a retreat into a rout, involving the capture of many men and much material. The British have taken over a further section of the West front, and their line now extends about nineteen miles south of the Somme. The whole of the offensive in this area is now under the direction of Sir Douglas Haig. President Wilson is not content to have his armament of merchant ships blocked, and is calling a special session of Senate. China is expected to break off relations with Germany, and subsequently to declare war.
