THE ST. ANDREW’S SCOTTISH SOCIETY

The above Society held a most successful social gathering in the Friendly Societies’ Hall on Friday evening last. The Chief (Mr .1. L. McG. Watson) presided over an attendance of about 120 members and friends, including Messrs D. McEarlane (Chief of the Highland Society) and T. Crawley (President of the Southland Caledonian Society). The meeting being open to non-mem-bers, a goodly number took advantage of the occasion to bo present, and the following were proposed for membership and duly elected: —-Mr and Mrs W. Timpany, Mr and Mrs William Foote, Mrs Chas. Pont, Mrs Itobt. Henderson, Mr and Mrs T. Crawley, Messrs It. J. Gumming, W. H. Cochrane, and John Mackin. non.

Rev. R. C. Hunter delivered a short witty address on Scottish traits and character, interspersed witli a rich fund of anecdotes, the effect of which, when told in the lecturer's happy style kept the audience overllowing with good humour. The speaker was warmly applauded for ids address. During the course of the evening the following programme of songs, instrumental selections and recitation was contributed: Songs, Mr and Mrs Mclnnes, and Mr J. C. Abernethy; violin selections, Mr Dickson: pipe selections, Pipe-Major C. W. Wilson; recitation, Mr C. J. McEachran. Mrs Wright played the accompaniments in her usual capable manner.

The meeting concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the “NaH/roal Anthem-”
