JANUARY'S WEATHER

THE TABLE OF READINGS.

The weather chart for the month just closed, as compiled from readings taken at Leunie.'s Waikiwi Observatory, discloses a run of high temperature which was broken only for a very brief period about the middle of the month. Maximum temperatures ranged from 86 degrees in the shade on the 28th to as low as 56 on the 17th. The lowest temperature for the month was 42 degrees, recorded on New Year's morning, January 1, too. brought the greatest range of temperature—26 degrees, from 72 down to 47. The month’s rainfall totalled 2.29 inches and was distributed over 17 days, the heaviest fall being one inch, recorded on the morning of the )7th. Westerly and south-westerly winds predominated although the breev.e was from the north-west quarter on several mornings. That the month's heat was more of a murky, oppressive kind than the brilliant, dazzling variety is proved by the sunshine records, which show no very exceptional burns, the only two of outstanding merit being one of slightly over 14 hours on the 12th and another, almost as long, on New Year's Day. Appended is the table, all readings being taken at 9 a.m. :
