Supmmer meeting concluded in fine yveather, but a strong wind prevailed, and this fact put the proposed trial against the one mile record by Adeladie Direct out of the question. "Dial the track was in gotd order was demonstrated by the fact that in the last race of the day Law Chimes won in time equalling the previous race records held by Yarraville and Dalwhinnie of Train 15 l-Ssecs. The racing was good throughout, and the starting was promptly carried out. In fact, the work of Mr W. F. Dunne in this department was the best yet accomplished by the gentleman. In the Second -Amateur Handicap backers went strongly for Betty Blue (J. McKewen, sen.) and Mona Vale. The latter got well away, but Caltcn, by Young McKnney—Rhea, paced smartly to the front and thereafter gave his supporters no cause for misgiving, winning easly by ten lengths from Robert K (M. Dawson) who headed off Bthcldonna by nearly a dozen lengths for second place. Mona Vale anil Betty Blue finished together next. The winner Is a useful hoppled performer and one likely to score again thethc near future in a tighter class. The placed horse* and their nearest attendants comprised a pacing brigade somewhat above the average in an amatenr contest. A favourite was quickly found for the M usselburgh Hand leap in Happy Jack, Winner of the First Amateur Handicap on the opening day, when it was seen that A. Pringle was to occupy the saddle, while the erratic Blackball (G. Lattimore) was next in demand, with Biinrise third selection, carrying the confidence of the majority of the Southland visitors present. There was some mixing at the .shirt Sunrise, among others ■ot going out too well. Undecided drew not and established a big gap over the early stage of the journey, hut Sunrise trotted past him in the back stretch the recond time. With a lap to go Royal Rothschild, by Rothschild —Jewess (G. Wallace) rapidly closed on Sunrise and had taken command with three furlongs to go. Royal Kotlutchild eventuallywon by ten lengths from Sunrise (A. WcLollan) who beat Hiroki by a hare length for second money. Arcadian was fourtti and Happy Jack fifth. Once he found his feet Sunrise, went steadily throughout, but could not discover the pace shown by Messrs Ritchie and i’atterson’ s winner. There was very heavy and even wagering on the Telegraph Handicap with Captain Stanley ( R. Logan) lavouritc and large investments on Korke’s Drift, Bax. Kaweka (W. Jones). Over the early stage* Eros ( Forbes i and Igtdy MarWret (J. Jamieson i were out in front, and with a lap to go the Southland pair were still in command from a bunched field. Going doyvn the back Captain Stanley shot out from Sobriquet with Fax closing up. Bax took second place turning out of the back straight and joined captain Stanley at the home bond. In the straight Bax, by Brince Imperial Patchwork (F. Holmes, .inn.) drew out and beat t aptain Stanley by nearly three lengths, with Sobriquet l McLellan i ten lengths away third, then came Neatla, Lady Margaret and Sir Gavin. The race was one of the Pest saddle contests seen on Forhury for a long time for over a mile and a-half although the first and second horses were well elear at the finish. Bax, who finished second to Whispering Willie in the N.Z. Gold <’up at Wellington on Tuesday last and run fifth in the Kensington Handicap on the opening day at Forbury, paced a solid race and carried strung support frm Mr W. S. Simes and "pi- stable connections. A protest against the winner for inconsistent rim. h mg, which was lodged by the owner of th-'.-ccond horse, was dismissed.

The principal event of the afternoon, Forhury Handicap, attracted a. strong .field, with Stanley s Child (Ft. Logan) carrying the confidence of hackers over the coupled pair, Chiklsdale (.1. Hrycci and Minston (It. Dunn*. Hoggin Huon and Childsdale got away badly, Bandura made a good showing during the curly stages, but with a lari to go A Ratlins, a four-year-old gelding hy (i.V,11,-Hu Ila mare, had taken commune! and he eventually won by three lengths from Stanley’s Child, with Moneymaker about two lengths off third, then came Sungod and Hardy Wilkes. Hail Moneymaker not got pocketed for about threequarters of a lap he might have won for A. Pringle. Stanley's Child qualified lor N.Z. Cup honours, at 1.36. while Moneymaker went Id’.." 3-5. Agathos had hitherto been looked upon as a very fast sprinter and the sturdy manner in which lie fought out two miles caused surprise and brought about a double figure dividend. He looks like developing Into a high-class, staying pacer.

The withdrawal of St Peter (Petereta) Violet M.i who was hardly considered ready for a hard task left a field of nine to contest the first classic event established in Maoriland for unhoppled three-year-olds. The appearance of the juveniles on the (rack was followed by a rush to all points of close view to see the wanning up work. The bracketed pair Beta Peter (A. Cox) and Marietta (K. McDermott) both moved nicely, hut the former travelled better than her stablematc and showed out to advantage over the balance of the field, with the exception, perhaps, of Peter Bell, who stepped resolutely and consistently. In the market the coupled pair were heavily backed, while there was support for Blue Wood t.J. Bryce) and .Peter Hell (A. Butterfield) in order, and there was also some money for the West Coaster, Marble Hall. The field moved out nicely but several of the contestants at once left their feet and there was a general mix-up from which Swift wood emerged unscathei followed by the Core-trained filly Jenny Wallace (S. G. Inder). In the trouble at the commencement Blue Wood collided with Peter Bell with, the result that one of the wheels of the latter’s sulky was pul completely out of action. Before a round had been completed Jenny Wallace left her feet badly and Beta Peter moved out into second plare in pursuit of Swlftwood, while Blue Wood made a forward move. From this stage Switwood was not troubled and eventually won easing up by ten lengths from Marietta, who beat Blue Wood by three lengths for second money, Beta Peter, who went into the air In the straight was fourth, and Jenny Wallace a long way off fifth, The sectional quarter times -cad as follows: 4Usees half-mile. 1.20 7-5: three-quar-ters. 1.59; mile, 2.89: ten furlongs, 3.15: one mile and a-half 3.55 7-5. It was appropriate that victory should rest with Mr T. Bitchie’s representative, Swlftwood, as that gentleman was one of the stewards of the F.P.T.C. responsible for the establishment of the event and in addition is an enthusiastic supporter of the sqnare-gaited light harness horse. Swlftwood is an exceutionally well-bred youngster, its he was sired by the double New Zealand (-up winner Wildwood June, while his dam. Swift, was got by Almont ( Rothschild —Puella) from a celebrated track performer, in Cling, by Vancleve—lvy. The fact that the winner was sired by Wildwood Junr. goes to the credit of Wildwood Farm, which has been associated with all recent classic winners in the South Island, viz., Admiral Wood, Prince Akwood Author Dillon (pacers), and Swiftwood t trotter) . It has also to be remarked that Wildwood Junr. has sired quite a number of square-gaited horses of late.

Wagering in Crescent Handicap was in the main confined to Rosie McKinney (A. Pringle) and Billy Parole (F. Holmes). The Southland pair, Annie K and Brookbell, were never at ease in the race, both breaking repeatedly. In the second lap the Australian - bred gelding Billy Parole assumed command and was never afte.rwards headed, winning by four lengths from a fcllew countryman in Paul Huon, who put up a brilliant inn to defeat Rosie McKinney by ten length for second place, with Mayfield and Parkfield next in order.

The coupled Moorland (A. Pringle) and Stanley’s Child (R. Logan) carried the most money in the Royal Handicap with Law Chimes t I*. Holmes) and Franzalena (W. Simes) bracketed as second fancy. From an excellent start Aloorla nd drew out snaartly and showed the way to I«iw Chimes. leading throughout, the Wyndham - owned son of Wildmoor Commander mare won easing up by four lengths from his stable companion Stanley’s Child, who came very fast to beat Law Chimes by five lengths for second place, then came Bacchus and Sungod together close up. Followers of K. Logan's stable secured a very acceptable win, as there was only one dividend owing to the coupled pair taking the dividend places.

There was fast and heavy betting on the An Revolr Handicap. Three conpled horses from F. Holmes’ stable carrying the most money, while General Wilkes (A. Pringle) trained by J. Bryce, was next in demand. .Note started well, but dropped one very early, the pace being too fast for her. Dalwhinnie rushed to the front and led into the home stretch, but here law Chimes, desperately ridden by E. McDermott, came strongly at the finish and won cleverly, with 0.1.C. close up third. General Wilkes fourth and Queen Patch fifth. BOWUkO. SATURDAY MATCHES. SOUTHLAND v. TE KANGI. A match was played between the abtrve clubs on Te Rang! green on Satnrday. and resulted in a win for Te Rangl by one point. The green was fairly keen and there was some good play between the respective rinks. Following arc the scores: S. T R. J. England, W. Martin, J. Dunlop, C. Stewart (s) 16 F. Crane. T. McDonald, K.
