FIRES
AN EVENING BLAZE. About 5.30 p.m. on Saturday fire wxS discovered in the nine-roomed dwelling of Mrs E. E. Mackay, situated almost on the corner of Yarrow and Mary streets, from the intersection of which the alarm was given. It is not known what was the cause of the outbreak which, when discovered by a young man who had just entered the house, the other occupants of which were also out, was burning in the bathroom and adjoin, ing bedroom. The place was a very old one and the flames had a good hold by the time the engine arrived although, with a strong water-pressure the brigade saved the shell of the house. A kapok mattress, which was only partially destroyed In the initial outbreak, became ignited again after this week began, and a passer-by summoned the firemen for the second time at 12.10 a.m. This time, however, the water soon prevailed. —It is understood that the insurances were £350 on the house and £IOO on the contents, the latter, at any rate, in the Guardian Office. In addition a visitor who lost about £IOO worth of effects was covered by a £6O policy, while another, who Is also a heavy loser, hod no insurance.
