SUBMARINE OPERATIONS
THE SUBMARINE MENACE BUILDING PASTER THAN BEING DESTROYED ■ BRITISH LOSSES IN SHIPPING BEING RAPIDLY REPLACED (Australian anil N.Z. Cable Association). LONDON, January 96. Received January 96, 9.50 p.m. The Daily Chronicle's expert says there is a strong suspicion that the Navy is destroying many more submarines than is officially announced. The Admiralty do not j)ublish lists. It. is certain, however, that the enemy is building submarines faster than they arc being destroyed, and our tonnage losses are increasing. Germany claims to have sunk 900,000 British tons in November, 419,116 in December, and that the total since the war commenced in 2,947,475 tons. The official British figures admit the loss of 787,575 tons from January to October. The tonnage of new British ships launched during the war up to 13th September amounts to 1,873,985 tons. Building was never more rapid than now, and nearly 50 standardised cargo carriers, now being constructed represent half a million tons. The United States is building at the rate of over 100,000 tons monthly.
