(Special to the Times), DUNEDIN January 2A. The attendance was not up to the annual standard at the opening day of the Dtmedin Cup trotting meeting, but tho weather was fairly good. The racing was interesting in most instances, but the contest for the principal event was spoiled owing to an Indifferent despatch and an unfortunate accident. A crowd is expected on Saturday when Adelaide Direct goes up against the Australasian mile record, while many will be attracted by the race for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. There was only one starter in a iieJd of eighteen in the First Amateur Handicap, who kept his feet, which explains the fact that Happy Jack, by Blackchlld —Specification mare (Killard) won pulling up by forty yards. The second favourite, Degree. travelled unevenly throughout, and lost second place by breaking when, nearly home. In the Stewards’ Handicap the Wairio winner Olivo Palm, by Wildwood Jnr— Alice Palm (Pringle) wan made favourite, but Ncacta and a number of others were well supported. Robert R. (Dawson) took command early, but 01iv»j Palm, closely atto.nded by Parinwana, was soon in attendance. Over the last lap Olive Palm had to be hard driven to keep near Robert R. The favourite closed up turning for home, and in a punishing finish won by a bare length, Parinwana ten lengths away. Then came Stockade, Vera. Mauritius and P.Obcrt Lyons.

Mcrivale was made favourite in a fine field for the Kensington Handicap, while Pax and others, including the southern representatives Wood King, were well supported. Little Hector made most of the running from First Chime, Silver Shoe and Merlvale, with Pax always closing up. Merivale, by Galind —Lincoln Yet mare (H. Frost) drew out over the. last circuit and won by six lengths from a bunch headed by First Chime (Pringle), with Silver Shoe a length off third. Then came Little Hector, Pax and Eros.

All that figured on the card appeared In the Dunedin Cup. The coupled pair Chlldndale (Bryce) and Minston (Dunn) were favourite.s. Stanley's Child was next, while Moneymaker came into the market at a late hour as third selection. St. Michael made play from a mix up at the starting post. Here Aguthos reared up and interefered with Tamarisk, ■whose, driver (it. Fteay) was thrown from his sulky and had his left leg broken below the knee. Several backmarke.rs moving up were also interfered with by the accident. St. Michael showed the way into the' second lap from Chlidalake, Hardy Wilkes and Moneymaker, the next division being headed by Sungod. With a lap to go R'hildsdale was leading Moneymaker. St. Michael, Hardy Wilkes, and Stanley's Child. Dp the hack stretch Pringle rushed Moneymaker (Rothschild — Coeoannt) to the front, and driving him out. brat Childsdale by three lengths, with Stanley's Child ten lengths off third. Then came St. Michael, Minston and Sungod. The party behind the winner supported the Rothschild gelding strongly.

A hot favourite was found in the Trial Handicap in the imported American mare True Pointer, by Domonio —Bally Coulter (F. Holmes), who took command parly, and heading off a good run by Neat la won cleverly by two lengths, with the Gore mare Biddy Tracey I MoMurray) ten lengths away third. I ben came Robert it, and Robert Dillon,

Gav Wilkes <Meßeniiii.ni was favourite for the Otago Handicap, with a slight Mil over Beeswing Il'ririgiei. Brookbeil iMcßellani was always prominent and with a lan to gu Brookbeil and Albertorea were singled out, with Gay Wilkes in hot pursuit, and Rittle Georg'* closing up. At the far turn Brookbeil showed in front, but left his feet. Albertoria (Kdwardst led into the straight, when Gay Wilkes got a clear run on the rails. In a good finish Rittle George got lip on the outside and won by nearly two lengths. Gay Wilkes beating Albertoria by half a length for second money. Then came Maddisou and Brookbeil. The lastnamed looked a likely winner until he left his feet. The winner is an ancient son of Stanley.

Bryce’s coupled pair, Colmina and Minston, were favourites for the King George Handicap, the Wyndham-owctid Moorland (Logan ) being next in demand. Bacchus Rl. Henderson) got away well, while Mamiareiia ami Sungod also commenced smartly. .Moorland was on the turn when the harrier rose. In the hack stretch Mandarcne, owing tr. the harrier tapes becoming cntangeld with his legs, fell, Sherwood falling over him, but Rimston, Wards amt Brankin escaped unhurt. Bacchus was left with a lung had ajul won pulling up by ten lengths from Dolinina, Sungod being two lengths off, and then came Frany.nleni ami Minston. When the accident occurred M a tula retie interfered with Moorland, and caused him to leave ills lce( and lose a chance of winning. The son of Harold Dillon is ow ned by Mr (). Wise, of Uamarn.

A numerous field contested th“ Flee(rie Handicap, Hrjcc's charge. Heiierai Wilkes, being elected a warm favourite, with the southern mare, More (Mcl.ellan i next in order of selection.
