THE SOLDIERS’ CLUB.

We cannot understand the reasons that induced the Borough Council to grant the application for the erection of the proposed new buildings, to be used as a Soldiers’ Club on the reserve at the corner of Clyde and Forth streets. The arguments against any further encoachment on the areas so wisely set apart as reserves appear to be unanswerable, Invercargill, thanks to the forethought with which it was laid out, rare in the early days when town-planning was not a feature of the growth of New Zealand cities, was abundantly provided with the breathing spaces that are now regarded as indispensable. They are important factors in the health of the community providing convenient means for recreation in the open air to thousands who cannot go far afield, and daily play grounds for the children. The Waterworks Reserve was the first to be annexed for Municipal purposes, and more recently a large portion of the Western Reserve was taken as a site for the tramway head-quarters. Liberal as the provision for reserves appeared to be in the early days of the town, no one will contend that the areas remaining will more than suffice for the requirements of the City that is to be. For this reason the policy of the Council should be to set its face against further encroachment, and in the matter of the Soldiers’ Club there are no reasons whatever why it should be built on a public reserve. There are many central sites that would he equally suitable, and if the cost of securing a section, providing none of the Corporation leaseholds is suitable, is a stumbling block, then measures should be taken to raise the money required, and a subsidy from the Council would be preferable to granting the use of portion of a reserve. We have every sympathy with the movement for providing a Club ror soldiers, and feel certain that the people of Inverckrglll will do all that is necessary to accomplish the object in view. We must protest, however, against any further whittling away of the reserves provided for future generations. We hold them in trust, and it is not right to allow them to be reduced except under the most exceptional circumstances. The matter is one upon which the public should take immediate action, and unless the Council alters its intentions, make such representations to Parliament as will secure the rejection of the legislation that is probably necessarybefore the reserve can be used as intended.

There is a fairly brisk demand for a!! classes of workers in the local market at present, and a shortage is reported in some branches.
