Captain STANLEY RICE (Mrs Rice. G Lime street, .Maori Hill. Dunedin, wife) LIEUTENANT A. B. C. SMART. : Lieutenant A. R. C. Smart, reported wounded on 2nd July in action in .the North of France, is the youngest son of Mr and -Mrs James Smart, 270 Ettrlck street. He was horn at Winslow, South Canterbury, on .March 2Ch. 1G94, but his parents removed to Southland while- ho was £ till a boy. and ho finished his education at tiie Lumsden High School. When war broke out I.lent. Smart promptly enlisted in the Main Body, and while tiie southern troops were in camp at'Tiihtir.it Park, Dunedin, was promoted sergeant. On August 1-th last Lieut. Smart was wounded at Suvla Bay. He made a good recovery and returned to rlutv in the middle of January this year. His excellent, services as a soldier won him his commission. Lieut. Smart was attached to the lath North Auckland Company, irt Battalion Auckland Infantry. PRIVATE J. S. STSWABT, Private John Stanley Stewart, reported wounded in action in France, was born in Invercargill. and having passed through the Middle School was employed as a tailor with Messrs Ansell and Co, -u hen wjir broke out and the call came for volunteers. Private Stewart answered promptly, and enlisted in the Main Bodv. He saw four months' active service at Gallipoli, and came through the fighting without injury.* Like most of those who escaped wounds in battle, however, his, health suffered and ho was invalided to England. On rejoining lie went with tiie Expeditionary Force to France, where in the lighting early in July he' sustained wounds in the ann and leg. Private Stewart was associated with the Star Football Club in Invercargill, and was only nineteen years of age when he left to join the main body. PSITATE A. W. E. SMITH. Mr Cecil A. Smith, of 40 Venus street, has received word that his son Private Arthur \V. E. Smith lias been wounded in the thigh and the left hand and has embarked for England. Private Smith, who is about 21 i years of age, was born at Malta, his father then being a coloursergeant in an Imperial Regiment stationed there. He was educated In London arriving here with his parents about eight years ago. AVhcn the call for volunteers came, lie joined the Main Bodl of the Expeditionary Force. While he was in Egypt he had two smistrokes •which prevented ids going to Gallipoli, although on one occasion he attempted to stow away in a transport in order to get there. He was a bugler In the old Oretl Rifles, and was afterwards an enthusiastic Territorial. When he enlisted he was in the employ of Mr J. Hislop, confectioner. . ... —. \ BZTLEMAN T. SAB.SWELL. Riflemen Francis Carswell, reported wounded in the chest, is a son of the late Mr Hugh and Mrs Hugh Carswell, of A venal road. He was born in Invercargill. and educated at the Middle and Southland Boys’ High School. At the time he enlisted he was engaged in farming pursuits at Lillburn. He was ft keen footballer, and at one time was a prominent member of the Invercargill Football Club. Rifleman Carswell left New Zealand with the first reinforcements of the Earl of Liverpool s Own on February 6 of this year. The bride was gowned in nattier blue, With shoes and toque of "tango” hue; The bridegroom, in a suit of brown, Looked quite the smartest "sport” in town.
