Murkensen, and Hindenburg are concentrating troops at various points, masking unprecedentedly vlolent attacks from the sector ZoblitsZaturce, preceded by the most violent artillery, ploughing the Russian first lines. The defenders refuged in the shell pits. The first assailants, who were Austrians, were allowed to approach to within 60 yards. The Russians volleyed at point-blank until the entire space in front of the trenches was strewn with corpses. The Austrians fled in disorder, but the German guns greeted them with a tornado of shrapnel, mowing down hundreds of the remainder, who frantically dashed to and fro between two fires with uplifted hands. The Russians saved 200. German infantry replaced the Austrians and displayed incredible obstinacy, despite awful losses, hurling themselves on the Russian bayonets as though Impelled by savage religious esctacy. Even the mortally wounded pressed forward, madly yelling, “To Lutsk,” There is a fierce struggle along the whole length of both banks of the Stokhed. The Germans are massing all available reserve from other fronts, and have evidently resolved to defend Kovel to the last gasy.
