HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD

M«).\THH - MEET! XG. The usual monthly meeting of th« Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday afternoon when there were present: Mr .1. MacGibbon (acting chairman), Mrs Cruickshank and Messrs Fraser, .Niven, Robertson, McDougall, Kerse, Cockburn and Petrie. Leave of absence was granted Messrs Hawke, Fleming and Brass. CORRESPONDENCE. A fair amount of correspondence was dealt with, the principal items being:— From the Inspector-General of Public Health forwarding information regarding State liability for medical treatment of returned soldiers. —Received. From Misses Hilda Schroeder (Ryal Bush), Janet Thomson (Invercargill), Alice Maude Boniface (Invercargill), Rosie McLelland (Wingatui) and Hilda Corbett (Invercargill) applying for positions as probationer nurses.—Applications filed. EXECUTIVE REPORT. The Treasurer reported that the Board’s receipts for June were £23 XI 6s Id; expenditure, £IS4O 14s Id; credit balance at Bank, £274 0s lid. A committee consisting of Messrs MacGibhon, McDougall, Cockburn and the Secretary-were appointed to . inspect and report on several matters in connection with the Lake County Hospital. The Committee recommend that tenders be invited for minor alterations at the Southland Hospital and that recommendations regarding further alterations be held over. The Committee report having received letters from the Patriotic Committee regarding operations fees paid by volunteers for active service to the Southland Hospital and recommend that the sums of £6 10s and £8 17s 6d be refunded to two recruits, also that £6 6s be paid to a member of the 18th Reinforcements who had been operated on for a minor ailment in the Southland Hospital. Four fresh applications for assistance were received and dealt with as follows: Two admitted to Lome Farm; 3 granted 7/6 per week out-door relief; and consideration of another case left in the hands of the Chairman aqd Secretary with power to act. The Treasurer reported having received through Mr Cockburn, tlje local member of the Board, a donation of £ls frbm. the citizens of Queenstown, towards the support of the Lake County Hospital, and he was instructed to thank the Mayor of Queenstown for same. The ’Secretary reported that the weekly eSpentiUtWT on outdoor relief -was £l7 3s 6d, as against £l7 0s 6d for the corresponding period last year. District Nurse Pryce, Invercargill, reported having attended 39 patients and made 234 visits in .Tune, while District Nurse Summerville, Stewart Island, reported having attended 10 patients and made 71 visits during the same period,— Report adopted. MATRON’S REPORT. The principal items in Matron Ewart’s report were; — . The final examination was held in June, after which Nurse Robertson left. Re three months Probationers.— Nurses Milne and Harrington have finished their three months’ trial. I recommend that they be appointed on (!*• permanent staff. Sister Wilson and I visited Dunedin Hospital to attend Hiss Bevilaqua’s lectures on the treatment of infantile paralysis. Her lectures and demonstrations were good. *We were also shown splint* suitable for each patient, II e were there a week and attended lectures twice daily. Please, acknowledge the following donations: —Mesdames tA. R. Mabson, Millar, Fawcett, .Scott, Messrs TV. Mitchell, Pink, Miss Thomson, and Acclimatisation Society. The report was adopted. GORE HOSPITAL. Dr J. E. Rogers reported that there had been under treatment, on June I, 10 males and 8 females. During th* month there were admitted 10 males and 6 ’females, 9 males and 5 females wera discharged, while 2 males died, leaving, on July 1, a males and 9 females. Tha out-patients treated were two males. Acting-matron Browne reported that the maintenance money for June had amounted to £54 9s. The fourth probationer began her duties on .Tunc 9, thus enabling a far more satisfactory arrangement of hours for the nurses. OTHER INSTITUTIONS. County Hospital.—The Medical Superintendent (Dr E. K. Edie) reported that June began with 6 male inmates. During the month 5 males and 1 fetnals were admitted, 2 males were discharged, ami one died, leaving, on July 1, 8 male* and 1 female. —Adopted. Kew Fever Hospital.—Matron Cowan reported that there were 3 male inmate* on June 1. During the month 4 male* had been admitted and 2 discharged, leaving 5 males in the Hospital on July 1. Lome Farm Home.—Ninety-six inmates were in the Home on the Ist July, 33 men, 6 women, 20 girls, and 3 7 boys. Admitted during the month, 4 men and 5 boys; left the institution. 2 men, 2 girls, and 1 boy. The Ma.ster wishes to thank Mesdames A. Miller, Ardold McDonald, T. F. McDonald, Somerset Smith, J. L.
