SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING
PROTEST BY N.Z. ALLIANCE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 12. The Now Zealand Alliance Executive to-day, after considering the Parliamentary attitude toward petitions .favouring six o'clock closing, adopted the following resolution: "That this executive enters an emphatic protest that after the M to Z Committee had taken evidenc over a week on the anti shouting and 6 o clock closing questions, and had recommended both petitions to the favourable consideration of the Government, that seven members of Parliament should use the forms of the House to prevent a vote being taken thereon when the report was submitted; it urges the Government to give the House another opportunity ol deciding thereon, believing that the need is great, and that the people are demanding these restrictions with increased force; it declares that tlie Government will incur a grave responsibility if _it fails to give the House an opportunity of closing bars at 6 p.m., or if, as an alternative, it does not provide for a referendum on similar lines to the one submitted to the people of New South Wales; there is abundant evidence that an overwhelming majority of the people sincerely desire and insistently demand the curtailment of the hours ol sale during the period of the war, and for six months thereafter.”
