Challis, reported died* of wounds, was a son of Mr and Mrs P. E. Challis, of this town, where Sergt. Challis was born and educated. Previous to enlisting Sergt. Challis was an electrical* engineer in the employ of Messrs A. and T. Burt, Auckland. He left with the Artillery of the Main Body, but, being invalided home, returned in the infantry of the Eighth Reinforcements. Sergt. Challis, who had passed the examination of the New York Institute of Electrical Engineers, was a member of the Auckland Rowing Club and an enthusiastic footballer, cricketer and rifle shot. During the watersiders’ strike of some years ago, he served iu the ranks of the special constables, and was a noted artillery shot in the Garrison Artillery’, Auckland. FBIYATE S. McSKTWMnCNQ. Private Samuel McSkimming, who is reported to have died of wounds, was a son of Mr and Mrs Samuel McSkimming, of Queenstown. He was born at Pembroke, and finished his education at the Arrowtown District High School. When quite a lad he joined the Arrow Brass Band, and took a great interest in football and cricket. MThen about 1 ( years of ago he left Arrowtown to join his Bisters in Gisborne, where he proved himself a fine athlete. He was a member of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club, the Povertv Bay Football Club, and the Gisborne City Band. After the war broke out he returned to finish his trade (baker) with his father at Queenstown, where he jointed the Queenstown Brass Band, and the Queenstown Tennis Club. In February, 1915, be enlisted and left Queenstown for Trentham, and left New' Zealand with the sth Reinforcements. He took part in the Suvla Bay landing: and the evacuation of Gallipoli. During ins stay on the Peninsula he enjoyed the best of health. Ho was among the first batch of Anzacs to reach France where he met his fate on June 20, 1916, being wounded in the head. At about the beginning of June last he spent a few days on furlough in London. LANCB-COBFOBAL udy. Lance-Corporal Edwin Elder Udy, reported killed in action in France on 20th June, was the eldest son of Mrs Udy, the Ridges, Wyndbam. He was born at Greytown, North Island, and educated first at Greytown and then at the Gore High School. In May, 1915, he enlisted, joining the Rifle Brigade Diverpool’s Own). Lance-Corporal Udy was a magnificent specimen of physical manhood — talk muscular, and exceptionally strong. Of a most agreeable personality, he was held iu the highest esteem by numerous friends. His age was about 20 vears; and ins character was unimpeachable. The greatest sympathy is felt fqr Mrs Udy in her heavy loss.
