SPORTING

NOTES lII’ SIR IIoPUED. The Wuimute R.C.’s annual fixture Will he he'd to-morrow (.Thursdayt. when a considerable amount of interest will centre in the Walmatc Cup r.vm which Slogan is the latest withdrawal. The Melbourne Troll ng fluids 1 vrby, Of lOOOsovs (one mile), which was decided in two divisions, one for pacers and the oilier for square trotters, on -March 6, resulted as follows; Pacers: Prince was won by the ex-Southlaruler, id.ellWiikes 3; the winner was ravourile ail'd scored by ll‘ yards in 2. I D"a. Trotters: First Trip 1. Patron 2, Pair Voyage 3; won easily in 3.3 1. Princess chimes, a New South Wales three-ycar-old, was driven by P. Piddle, the crack Sydney reinsman, who recently paid a successful visit to Maoriiand with Spot and Other horses. As a two-year-old last season Princess Chimes won in the Melbourne Sires’ Produce Slakes in her division in 3.21, and prior to leaving Sydney to race in the Derby she finished third in a race in 2.21U... The trotting winner, First Trip, is a Victorian-bred colt.

'iha Newmarket Handicap winner, Amata. by Walace, who has gathered in £SOOO in stakes, is raced on letisc by Mr Walter Landalo, an Australian, who lias been fighting in the trenches in Flanders for some months past. Bite has scored over all distances, from six furlongs to a mile and a-half. The grand daughter of Carbine has won eight races.

At the Hobart Trotting Club’s meeting on Marrh 1 the Dardanelles Handirap, of 60sovs: limit 5.2t (two miles), was won by the ex-Southlandcr, Bellthornc, by Bellman, 20yds behind, in 6.22. In a field of fifteen the winner was almost equally backed with the favourite, and won by seven yards. At latest advice the light harness sport was booming in Tasmania, and people well qualified to judge say that it will even increase in popularity.

At the Moorefielcl races, Sydney, on March 4, the Blenheim sportsman. Mr J. J. Corry, won the Flying Handicap (six furlongs) with the five-year-old mare, Margerita, by A.-SsA^es —Margaret, the pony marc beating sixteen well-known horses in 1.16. Prior to her success among the horses Margarita competed in the pony ranks in Sydney, and proved herself a champion, her last performance being a success with 10.9 in the saddle over seven furlongs in 1.90. In Hie Aloorefield race she won as second favourite. The March Handicap (one mile and a-qharter) at the same meeting fell to the six-year-old gelding Delara (7.9), who .won by a head from the imported Sir Howard (6.7) and four others, the point of the performance, as far as New Zealanders are concerned resting in the fact that Delara’s sire. Lord Dclaval, an Auckland-bred horse, at one time stood in Southland, where he was not given many chances of distinguishing himself.

The death of the Launceston Cup winner, Hock Temple, is reported from Hobart. Writing in the Tasmanian Mail “Galtee More” makes the statement that the horse’s death was due to foul play, supposed to have been committed on the night before the date originally fixed for the Hobart Cup race. He writes. —"From the time he won the Launceston Cup until the day of the postponed Hobart Cup the horse was in splendid health, and how fit he was to race the best of judges of a horse’s condition freely commented on at Mowbray. The night prior to the Hobart Cup ho was well and hearty when his box was. as usual, secured with a Yale lock on the door; but the following day his trainer thought he looked a bit dull and drowsy, and when the horse showed no disposition —as was his wont —to force the pace, if allowed, from the rise of the barrier, and none of his usual dash at any part of the race, his trainer's suspicion that he was not well was confirmed. From then until his death the horse suffered much from some trouble in the stomach, and, although he actually succumbed to pneumonia, the latter was an illness which supervened on the primary one. This. I have on medical authority, is not unusual in pneumonia eases with humans, and I don’t suppose it would be with equines. Anyway, there cannot, I think, be much doubt, when all the circumstances are considered, that Rock Temple was got at and dosed on the eve of Hobart Cup day. One thing at least is certain that there’s not a shadow o£ truth in a rumour, probably set going by the envious of Sullivan's Success as a trainer, that the latter used arsenic in connection with the preparation of his horses. He has never used this, or any other dangerous drug; in fact, is no patron of the chemists, as the latter can certify. But, as happened in connection with the poisoning of the celebrated horses Fishhook and Newminster on the mainland some years ago, the dosing of Rock Temple may in days to come be a less guarded secret than it is to-day. When rogues fall out, etc., etc.”

After disappointing his connections on a number of occasions, the Sydney horse, The Christian Brother won the Autumn Handicap (one mile and five furlongs) at Flemington last week. He is a well-bred horse by Something Irish (son of the English Derby winner Diamond Jubilee) from Charmed Life, by Orzil from Colours (dam of Australian Star and Tartan), by Grandmaster (sire of Gipsy Grand), His sire. Something Irish, is said to have been named by accident. The story goes that when a colt his trainer wished to enter him for certain events, but was debarred from so doing under the rules until the youngster was named. His owner. Air F. Foy, of Sydney, was out of town, but the trainer telegraphed to him to name the colt. Air Foy replied, “Call him somethin; Irish," meaning for the trainer to select an Irish name; but the trainer accepted the message literally, and registered him as ’Something Irish,” which surely suited the quaint humour of Air Foy to the letter. Mr Foy is original in the naming of his horses. For instance, his You’re a Liar and You’re Another, the two trotters, would surely have created amusement., had they been gone on with.

The death is reported from Melbourne of the thoroughbred horse Radnor, who was recently purchased by .Mr J. W. Irving for use as a stallion sire in Queensland. -Mr Irving has received a wire to the effect that Radnor liaos been killed, but no particulars are given. He was bred in New South Wales in 1910 by the Messrs Aloses, and was by Earlston (imp.) from Burletta. by Wallace from La Tosca, by Robinson Crusoe from Nightmare, by Panic. He was purchased as a yearling for lOOguns, by the Sydney trainer, the late Isaac Earnshaw, who won three races with him as a two-year-old, but had no luck with him as a three-year-old. After Radnor had run second to Beragoon in the V. R . C. Derby and had finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup, he was purchased by Mr S. P. Mackay for InOOgns. Mr Alackay is proverbially lucky in buying horses, and this was the best purchase ho ever made. Radnor won the next seven races in which he. competed. He was second to Lilyvcil in the A.J.C. Cumberland Stakes, and unplaced in the A.J.C. Plate, won by Cagou. Air Mackay then sold the horse and Con Ton in one line to Mr L. Falkiner for JOUOgns. Mr Falkiner did not succeed in winning a race with either. That is the iuck of buying and selling racehorses. Radnor won altogether £11,299 in stakes.

It is stated that R. Horry will attempt to make the weight to pilot Ardcnvhor in the Wnimate Cup to-day. Roumania’s victory in the Nelson Cup is the .second time the Whitney colours have been successful in that race. Ceylon winning two years ago. Good reports are to hand from Auckland as to the promise displayed by Silver Pine, a son of Marble Arch and .Miss Dawson. He was a winner in hack company at the Te Aroha fixture. The three-year-old division is strongly in evidence among the nominations for the chief handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. in the Groat Easter they are represented by Flying Start, Baltic Eve, Sweet Corn, Gold Painting, Eligible, Wishful. Recorder, Halina. Ardenvhor, Tip-up, Down, Marco Bello, Malvolio and Nones, while the Groat Autumn list includes Adjutant, Eligible, Snub, Wishful, Ardcnvhor, Marc Anthony, Marco Bello, and Nones.

It is reported from Christchurch that !he th. rce-ycar-old pacing colt Tamarisk, by Wildwood Junior—lola. is at present ffer ng from a cold, and is having an oa-y time, ’the colt contracted the cold dining his trip to Coro last December, arid he has not got clear of it yet. in view of the New Brighton Derby, it is to be hoped Unit ho will soon be well ri'.oi.-di ! o resume it is i.ra’.n:ng.
