MARTIAN MAID BREAKS A LEG. (By Telegraph.) DUNEDIN, February 16. Beautiful weather was experienced for the opening day of the Dunedin Cup meeting. There was a large attendance, but not a great many South landers were in evidence. The galloping surface was on the firm side. Wagering on the Autumn Hurdles, Moddite, Bore, and Lord Frederick were most in demand. Bore wars first to show out. and led to the straight and past the stand from Lord Frederick (Ellis), ami Peerless (Willis), in company, and Peerless was always racing on the outside, while Lord Frederick was hugging the rails. In the back stretch first Peerless then Lord Frederick challenged Bore, but the four-year-old Calibre gelding held the command, although not always jumping well. Racing up the hill Moddite was making up ground from a long way back. Bore (McSwecney) led into the straight and after crossing the last fence Bore drew away and won by two lengths from Peerless, with Moddite a length and a-half away, half a length in front of Lord Frederick. The last-named failed over the latter part of the journey. King Torrent was a long way off last. In the Gladbrook Handicap Kiltess led out well clear of the field until nearing the straight, when Hardshot (Emerson) headed her. A hundred yards from home Silent Way, by Calibre—Golden Way (Dononvan), ran past Hardshot, and wnn by a length from the fast finishing Cincinnatus, who was second last to leave the starting post. Charleville a length away third, just in front of bunched Kiltess, Hardshot, and .Marc Antony. Kokowal (A. Wilson) carried some Southland money, but finished a long way back. Silent Way scored easily, but would have had trouble had Cincinnatus got away decently. Hardshot finished very tired in a fast race. The fact that Oliver was in the saddle helped to place Warrlaneer in the position of favourite for the Champagne ! Stakes over Good Hope (K. E. Jones) and i the coupled pair Killena (L. Wilson) and | Kilkeo. From an excellent start Kilkee made the running to the .straight, his sable mate next. In the run home Wardancer and Good Hope moved, and a spirited finish resulted in Sir George Clifford's Good Hope, by Cannie Chiel— To-morrow, winning by a head from Killena, with Wardancer three-quarters of a length away, half a length ahead of Kilkee. The winner, a line big colt, i should furnish into a useful horse. The withdrawal of Jeannot left a field ; of ten to contest the Dunedin Cup, for which a splendid start was effected. Racing past the stand Martian Maid and ; Ogier were prominent from Hesione. First Glance, and Bee, with Snub, Fen- ’

dor, and United Service bringing up th rear. At the mile post Martian Mae was showing the Way from Ogier, an. the Invercargill mare continued to leai past the six furlong post, but was lire scntly joined by Ogier, then came Hosi one. while Rorke’s Drift could bo see; moving up, followed by Fender. Th field closed up approaching the turn, bu when the heads were turned for horn Martian Maid, when in the lead, sudden 1 ly dropped back and pulled up. Rorke’: * 1 Drift and Ardenvhor weie singled ou e after passing the distance. In a punish 3 ing finish v'ie former won by a bar. t helf length, while Fender, who put in : 3 great run over the last half mile, wai four lengths away third. Then cairn United Service, First Glance, Ogier Snub, Hesione, and Bee in that order Martian Maid broke a fetlock and had ti be shot. Rorke’s Drift, by Calibre— O’Rorke’s Fancy, was well ridden by C Emerson. The winner was turned ou i. in fine shape by trainer P. T. Hogan fo: Messrs F. A. and V. N. Price, who gavi , 610 guineas for the gelding at J. C. N Grigg’s sale in Invercargill some firm back. It will bo noted that the firs: three races on the card were won bj sons of Calibre, a large number of whos< stock are now owned in Southland. Tin 3, Calibre gelding is the first Southland owned horse to win the Dunedin Cup. In the Appentices’ Plate the three year-old filly. Spangle, by Martian — Nantes (T. Mussen), jumped out well and leading all the way won by threi lengths from the stallion Kentloch, wht was recently at stud in Oamaru. Fieri Cross was third, just in front of Garetta Trainer Hogan’s charge, St. Hilarj - (Lockett), was badly left with St. Ew( 3 and Aweta. Wagering operations in the Publicans Handicap were principally confined tc Panmure and Robert Bell (Olsen). At the start Ivaminohe got very badly away and Buller was slow to move. Charmilla and Multoe made the running to the straight from robert Bell and Panmure, i then came Charlotte and Reval. In the straight Panmure got a clear run on the rails and was thus able to beat Robert Bell by nearly a '/Tngth, with Reval third. Then followed Multoe, Twelfth Night, 'Charlotte. Oliver rode a good race on the imported horse Panmure (Forfarshire Panacea), recently purchased in England by trainer G. Price for Mr Highden. When Martian Maid broke down in the Dunedin Cup she was two lengths clear of her field inside the distance and looked like going on. She must have got into the money had she stood up. Shortly after a good start for the Stewards’ Welter Handicap Ringform was found in advance of the field by Palisade, and the pair made the running into the straight, closely attended by Daringdale. Palisade retired inside the distance amj Ringform and Daringdale (A. McKay), fought out a good finish, the latter winning by a neck. Then came Merrie Gain, third, Martuk and Countass Tolstoi. The winner, Daringdale (Canrobert St. Bridglr) has been an absentee from the winning list for a considerable time. Wild Pilgrim ran in the rear throughout. The heavily backed Southlander, Pinnacle (Donovan), met unexpected opposition in the Berwick Handicap, when Mr Harvey Patterson’s Australia - bred gelding, Sir Malt, by Maltster—Graceton (G. Pine) led all the way. and beat him home by nearly three lengths, Bellshire third four lengths away, a head in front of Deltonia and Lion, who were on level terms. The well-known racehorse My Lawyer died this morning, as the result of injuries sustained seme time ago in a fight with another horse. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. DUNEDIN, February 16.
