Lady Eileen Clarke has just had a little son and heir, who was born at her father’s (Lord Ranfurly’s) house, states the Queen of January 1. Her husband is in the Bucks Hussars, and has been home for some time now recovering from a severe wound he received while fighting in the Dardanelles. They were married in the very early days of the war, having one of the quietest war weddings.

The Rev. Thos. Harrington has decided to contest the seat on the Borough Council left vacant by Mr Sheehan’s resignation. The vacancy was originally caused by Cr. Archer’s removal to Wellington, and it is a strange coincidence that Mr Harrington was for some years minister of the Baptist Church that Mr Archer has just left ,and was the founder and first minister of the "Wellington church to which Mr Archer has now gone.

The Wellington correspondent of the Lyttelton Tipies writes ; —"A recent issue of the London Times states, on the authority of its X’ew Zealand correspondent, that the Chief Justice, Sir Robt. Stout, will succeed the late Sir Joshua Williams as Xew Zealand’s representative on tho Judicial Committee of tho ITivy Council. Sir Robert Stout informs me that tho report is not well founded, and I learn from another official quarter that there is not much likelihood of an early appointment to the position.”

Among Friday’s telegrams was a message from Melbourne which stated that the whole of the Light Morse Brigade now in Egypt, together with the Xew Zealand Brigade, will form a Mounted Division, under the command of MajorGeneral Chauvcl. The Ashburton Guardian says the commander (who is a cousin of Air J. R. Hart, of Ashburton) is 51 years of age, and took part in the South African War. Ho was born at Canning Down South, on the borders of New South Wales and Queensland, and went to Africa as a captain with an Australian Contingent. When the war was over he returned to Australia as a major, and later on lie went to England. When the present war broke out he was at Home, and was offered, and accepted, the command of the Australian Light Horse, which position he hold right through the Gallipoli campaign. He is at present with his command.

Messrs A. YV. Rodger and C. Campbell, chairman and secretary of the Southland Patriotic Committee respectively, leave by this afternoon’s express for Wellington to attend a conference of patriotic societies which is to bo held on the 17th inst. Tho Hon. G. YV. Russell has wired Mr Campbell to the effect that he proposed submitting the various resolutions forwarded by the Southland Patriotic Committee to the Patriotic Conference for consideration. Messrs Rodger and Campbell will also attend a conference at Dunedin to-night when it is anticipated the representatives from the various patriotic committees in the Otago military district will be present. One of the most important matters to be decided at the Dunedin meeting will be the question of the boundaries within which each committee is to operate.
