ILLEGITIMATE BIRTHS
EFFECT OF THE WAR. (Per United-Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 10. The effect of the war upon the number of illegitimate births is shown by figures prepared by the Registrar-Gen-eral’s department at the direction of the Minister or Internal Affairs. The figures are : Illegitimate A’ear. Marriages. Births. 1911 .. 8,870 1,078 1912 .. 9,159 1,177 1913 .. 8,846 1,181 1914 .. 9,326 1,302 1915 .. 10,262 1,100 The substantial increase in the number of marriages is attributed in part to the desire of certain men to appear as “married” in the National Register, though it is a fact that many members of the Expeditionary Forces have hastened their marriages before leaving the dominion.
