MUNICIPAL PRINCESS, NURSE O'SHEA (No. ;'.).' The entertainment committee held a most enthusiastic meeting in the Town Hall last night. The various sub-com-mittees reported what progress they had made in their several departments. Gasworks Committee decided to open a shooting gallery in the shop next the Town Hall. Tlie window of the shop to be used to display art union prizes, etc. Several fresh schemes were brought forward and sub-committees set up to deal with them. In Victoria Hall on Thursday- next tlie ladies are holding a "coin" afternoon and evening, and are also selling produce. Gifts of any description will be acceptable and will lie received either at the Gasworks 01 the Town Hall. ARMY AND NAVV PRINCESS. A meeting of the executive was held last evening. Captain J. L. Lennie presiding-. Reports were received from tlie y anous sub-committees which indicated that matters were well in train. The deputation that waited on tne Rugby Union reported that the Union had decided to grant the use of Rugby Park for the big military demonstration on Declaration Day, ; August 4. In connection with the demonstration at Winton on August 3. it was decided to charter a special train to transport the performers and others. For the position of secretary, Lieut. Clapp, of the Sth Regiment, was selected out of eleven applicants.

It was decided also that, in order to popularise the committee’s rooms, everypurchaser of a -s (id art union ticket be given a free ticket in the raffles for either a gold watch or a diamond ring. Mr D. Varcoe presented the committee with a revolver and case to be disposed of as the committee think tit, and it was decided to write and thank Mr Varcoe tor his donation.

In connection with a challenge issued by a prominent territorial in the town to those opposed to art unions and raffles. and offering his cheque of £5(» if the Army and Navy raised a further £l5O without, recourse to raffles or art unions, the committee enthusiasticallyendorsed the challenge, and decided to ask the Ministers’ Association to take up tlie challenge. Arrangements for the huge demonstration on Declaration Day, August -1. at Rugby Park, were reported to be well in hand, and everything indicated that the fixture would be a pronounced success.

Captain Macdonald, treasurer for the Army and Navy Princess (Xo. 6). received tire following letter yesterday, which practically amounts to a challenge to those who object to the art union methods to raise money for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The challenge has been readily accepted, as the Army and Xavy Princess committee feel sure that the amount will be more than doubled in the.time stated. It is to be understood that any sum will be accepted; the only conditions of the challenge is -that £3OO must be raised by August 111. All donations will be acknowledged through the

On Tuesday evening (August :trd) a grand demonstration will be held in Winton. followed by a concert and sale of produce, tiie proceeds of which will be devoted lo the. Army and Navy Princess fund, in connection with this event a. special train will- run from Invercargill. A procession of Territorials, cadets and citizens. 1 leaded by tiie Southland Regimental Rand, will parade tiie streets prior to tiie entertainment. Several handsome donations, aggregating in all several hundred pounds, were reported, with the likelihood of almost doubling tiieis amount. A largely-attended meeting of the ladies' social committee was also hold in the ladies’ committee rooms, bvhen several functions were proposed for an early date. Chief amongst these was a gift afternoon by two ladies, when tea will be provided free. The Princess (Miss Milne) will be in attendance, and it is hoped that her lady supporters will attend in large numbers, bringing gifts suitable for sale. This function is to take place in the Federal Tea Rooms. QUEEN OF THE LAKES. A general meeting of the executive of the Professional and Civil Service Committee was held in the Town Hall last night, Mr J. I— McG. Watson occupying the chair. Sct era 1 applications were received tor the position of secretary, and Mr R. P. Meek was unanimously. elected to the position. It was resolved that Mr J. C. Dale lie appointed recording secretary. Arrangements were made in connection with the produce stall which is to be erected at the rotunda, and it was decided that the Lumsden Committee lie asked to consign all goods to the secretary. The produce stall will he opened on Saturday, and Miss Johnson, Princess of the Hakes is to lie invited to perform the onening ceremony. The following sub-committee were appointed:— Finance: Messrs A. Jackson i convenor), A. S. Browne, G. Finlayson, A; B. Haggitt and J. Miller. Raffles; Messrs H. X. Macdonald. O. H. M. McClure, A. A. Douglas, C. C. Moffett, A. S. Brown, and J. Miller, and Dr Macdonald. Printing and Advertising; Messrs Murray, Miller and the secretary, with power to add to number. It was resolved to communicate with all members or the professions and Civil Service throughout Southland, and that tickets and badges be forwarded' to them forthwith. MERCHANTS' AND TRAVELLERS’ PRINCESS, No. 2. A large and enthusiastic meeting of the ladies’ committee, held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last evening, was presided over by Mrs W. J. Dunjop (Jpresident'), nearly forty members of the committee being present. It was decided to invite the Princess, Miss Minnie Mills, to an afternoon tea on Friday next, to meet her lady supporters. Full particulars will be advertised, and no doubt there will be a large gathering of those interested in her return as Queen of the Carnival. In connection with all public demonstrations, it was decided that ladies participating should wear ordinary costumes with white blouses, yellow or gold ties, white hats, and a distinctive armlet which will be provided by the committee. The president of the section (Mr J. Thomson) announced that Saturday, August 7, had been allocated to the Merchants’ and Travellers’ as a special collection day, and the public may look forward to this day with pleasurable anticipation of the novel methods which will bo demonstrated of extracting' the nimble or sixpence as may be, in aid of the good cause. Various other matters were discussed and If the Merchants’ and Travellers' Committee does not succeed in placing its Princess in the throne at the conclusion of the Carnival it will lafVe succeeded in .supplying the public with many interesting methods of disposing of its surplus cash. A meeting of Travellers will lie held in the Y.M.C.A. on Thursday evening when it is expected that all blocks of tickets, for the raffle for the case of cordials presented by Messrs Moffett and Co, will be handed in, the committee being anxious that the result of this competition should be announced in Thursday’s paper. In future, dates are being lixed for the drawing of raffles and winners of art unions promoted by this section will be announced weekly. A
