THE COMPETITIONS

SPLENDID ENTRIES. For the forthcoming festival the Invercargill Competitions Society has received highly satisfactory entries, and the way in which the classes have filled ensures a series of highly attractive programmes in which the audience will have the opportunity of hearing not only many local competitors whose Rices are familiar on Invercargill platforms, but also many new competitors of merit from outside centres. The entry from Dunedin this year is particularly large, and oilier centres are also represented. Some idea of the strength of the chesses may be gained by a glance at the vocal competitions. Eor the champion song there are 22 entries: for the men’s sacred solo there are 13 entries; ladies’ sacred solo, 15 entries; men’s bass solo, .10 entries: baritone solo, 11 entries; old English song for gentlemen, 13 entries; for the song and accompaniment by amateurs, 16 pairs have entered; in the vocal duets there are 11 pairs, and in the song with accompaniment and obligato there are 7 sets. In the elocution section the classes have also filled satisfactorily, and in the important championship sections there are 15, 11, 13 and 12 entries in each. The literature class may be described as thoroughly representative of the dominion. The original poem and original story have attracted 26 and 27 entries, and in nearly all the other classes there is promise of keen competition. Five choirs have entered, three from Invercargill, one from Rluff and one from Gore. A survey of (he entries indicates that from the point of view of the number of competitors engaged and the attractiveness of the programmes the forthcoming festival will be one of the best which the Society lias yet held.
