THE LATE MR GALLOWAY

PROPOSED MEMORIAL, At a meeting of citizens on Thursday it was decided to give the public an opportunity of subscribing to a memorial that will serve to keep alive the memory of the late Mr lan Galloway and of the noble act of self-sacrifice by which he lost his life. The painful facts of Mr Galloway’s death by <irowr.ing while attempting to save the life of a pupil of the Southland Boy’s High School who was in difficulties in the surf at the bade beach Grcenhiils. need not bo recalled. The sad tragedy will not soon be forgotten. Very appropriately it has been decided tliat the ipemorial shall take the form of a challenge trophy to be competed for by physical drill squads from year to year. It will not be possible to win the trophy outright, but it will be held by live winners for the year whose names will be engraved upon it. If funds permit it may possibly be decided to give a cup or medals to the winners each year, but the winning and holding of the trophy will in itseif be a high honour. The movement is one that will command widespread support, and there should be no difficulty in raising a substantial amount. Subscriptions will be acknowledged in this place. The following amounts have come to hand;— * £ s. d. Amount previously acknowledged '4 1 4 o Mrs J. D- McGruer 1 I 0
