CHSXSTCSURCH TRAINING NOTES. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. Sir George Clifford has again leased the stallion Cannie Chiel, by Clanranald —Weathereye, for the season. He was sent on Saturday to Stonyhurst, where he will be mated with several of Sir George Clifford's marcs. Antagonist will be located during the season at Riccarton at Mr H. Tinkers Ribbonwood Lodge. Among his mates will be Winning Way. by Cannie Chiel— Lady Wayward, and Scottish Star, by Clanranald —Safeguard. Sir George has also made arrangements with regard to some of his other blood mares for the season. The rep. match against Otago is to ho played on Rugby Park on August 27th. A match is to be played against Canterbury en route to Wanganui, date to he arranged. Mr A. Hartley was appointed to manage the touring team, and Mrs Searell Will act as champerone. FOOTBALL. CANTERBURY V. SOUTHLAND. The fixture between the above-named Provinces to-day promises to be a notable gathering, judging by the keen interest displayed in football circles. Southland have always put up good games again-t the Canterbury reps., although it is now some ten years since a win was recorded in our province’s favour. Tlie visitors held a’ practice at Rugby Park yesterday morning, and look a keen sturdy combination, which will have to bo reckoned with. Yesterday afternoon they won* the guests or the S.R.F.U. at the Bluff, and last evening they attended Fullers’ Pictures. The local team will lie as originally selected, with the exception of the wing-forward, Edginton, who is suffering from a bruised thigh. His place will be filled by Barry. As previously intimated ladles will he admitted to the grandstand free of charge. Should weather conditions prove favourable a large gathering should witness the game.
