During the week a fair amount of wheat has been placed on the market, but the volume has not been of such large proportions as the season of the year would warrant. The bulk of the wheat offered has been Tuscan, but for this variety the demand is anything but strong, although owing to the firm attitude of holders prices have not declined, the former rates still being current, although It should be mentioned that at these prices merchants are not anxious to secure stocks unless they can see a way of turning them over without pass, ing them through the stores. The current price is 3s 6d to 3s 6 (id, Pearl and Hunters, on the other hand, are scarce, and the prices for these have hardened during the week, the current price being 3s T(id to 3s 8d for the former and 3s 7d for the latter; but for very prime samples of either sort a slight advance on these prices could be obtained. Advices from the south show that wheat is now offering more freely, the satisfactory weather experienced lately having given farmers an opportunity to make some progress with threshing. In the Taleri prices for Red wheat have ranged from 3s 8d to 3s 9d, and from 3s lOd to 3s 10 (id for Velvet. In the Xorth Otago district sales have been made up to 3s 9Vid for Velvet and 3s 7(id for Fed sorts, these prices in every case being on trucks at stations, less commission.

A medium business is being done in oats, and if anything pricea have hardened during the past week, the current price for Gartons being Is lid to 2s for ordinary sorts, super samples bringing slightly more. At the moment the supply is quite adequate for the demand, which is, in the absence of shipping facilities, almost exclusively local. Very limited quantities of chaff are coming to hand, and the current price is 55s to 57s 6d on truqks at country stalions. The North Island and the West Coast still continue to draw their supplies largely from the northern part of the South Island, and the consequence is that few outside orders are being placed in Canterbury.
