AN AMERICAN RIOT
ATTEMPT ON A MAYOR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, March 27. An unsuccessful attempt was made at Rock Island to assassinate the Mayor, Mr Schrievcr, bullets being fired through the windows of the City Hall. A squabble arose recently between the Mayor and the editor of the local paper. Citizens took sides, and the quarrel culminated in a mob attacking the' police station. A general riot broke out, and the police fired and killed one man, and injured several others. The mob then attacked the gaol and endeavoured to release imprisoned rioters, and were driven off after charges by the police. The .National Guard was ordered out. The Mayor incurred the enmity of the newspaper editor by attempting to clear the city of undesirables. MARTIAL LAW. DYNAMITE OUTRAGE FEARED. NEW YORK, March 2S. Received March 29, 1.55 a.m. Martial law has been proclaimed at Rock Island, and all public gatherings have been suppressed. * A dynamite outrage is feared. ' Two persons were fatally injured as the result of a police charge.
