The Financial Times states that the rise In Houlder Brothers’ preference shares is due probably to amalgamation with Furness, Withy, and Company, enabling Houldcrs to continue to carry frozen meat at an Increased number of ports of call. '' The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited have received the following cablegram from their London House, under date the 28th Inst;— Wheat. The position of the market for wheat is firm, there is a good demand owing to decreased supplies, and the market has an encouraging outlook. Oats. The market for oats is firm, and the outlook is encouraging. AUCKLAND MARKET REPORT. (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, March 28. Potatoes. The market for potatoes is farily strong this week; in fact the position may be described as much firmer throughout the South Island. This Is due to the uncertainty regarding the crop prospects. In some quarters the blight has made its appearance in the south, and in other parts the yields have proved exceedingly light. The low prices which were looked for a little while ago will probably not now be seen, as quotations from the South are quite 10s per ton above the prices asked a fortnight ago, and there is every prospect of a further advance In the near future. Local supplies are still coming forward in small quantities; but what are now left will be required in the producing districts, and from now forward it is expected that southern potatoes will constitute this market’s supply. Prices are £4 15s. to £5 per ton for Southern of prime quality. Local potatoes range from £4 upwards, according to condition. A large quantity of Inferior local potatoes are still held In stock. Oats. The market for oats is again very strong, as Australia has ’again come In as a buyer, which has had the effect of firming up business generally. The local market Is bare, and the price has firmed up a penny per bushel, quotations ruling 2s 8d ex wharf, and 2s 9cl ex store. Weather conditions in the South are still uncertain and it is exceedingly difficult to forecast the future. In a month’s time the market will, no doubt, be more settled. Grass and clover seeds are now selling freely, as a few days fine weather enabled some successful burns to be made. Stocks are now considerably reduced, and there will practically be no carry over, as the season will be extended till April. Chaff. Local chaff is offering more freely, advantage having been taken of the tine weather to get the machines to work. Local chaff is quoted at £4 to £4 5s at country stations. Arrivals of Southern chaff have not been heavy, and as far as can be seen, prices will remain steady for some time. Large quantities of chaff are offered freely from the south. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. (Per United Press Association). DUNEDIN, March 28. Stock Exchange sales:—Union Steam, £2 9s (two parcels). Sales reported: Union Steam, £2 10s 3d and £2 10s 6d.
