OUR SOLDIERS
SWEARING IN THE DRAFTS. The first call to arms for the Territorial drafts in Southland In connection with the new defence scheme was made last night. The whole of the posting has been carried out right through the Southland district and last night a start was made with A Coy., Btli Regiment (more genet ally'known as the Invercargill City Guards). Seventy men were sworn in by Lieut. Kelly, Officer Commanding A Coy. Tho full strength is ;,f.. but the absentees were all satisfactorily accounted for, leave of absence for sickness and oilier causes having been duly granted. The men on parade wire a lino body of young fellows ami ibeir behaviour was excellent. It was quite obvious that many of them had been drilled before. To-night the C Battery will assemble to swear in drafts and on Friday the Awarua Rifles will parade for tlie same purpose. On Wednesday afternoon the A Class shots in the City Guards will hold firing practice on the Grasmere range at 500 and 600 yards.
