THE WEATHER

ABNORMAL CONDITIONS. Quite unusual and unseasonable weather conditions continued throughout last wepk. The temperature generally was low and some of the days were bitterly cold, while the rainfall was considerable. On the night of Sunday, sth Inst., six degrees of frost were recorded at Invercargill, and considerable damage was done in vegetable and (lower gardens. On Friday night it was wintry out of doors. Bitter hall blasts struck the town at frequent intervals, and there was some thunder and lightning. Saturday was an improvement, but late in the afternoon heavy rain set in and fell for three hours or more steadily. These unsettled and rough conditions are general throughout the district. The rain has had a wonderful reviving effect upon pastures. The growth of grass is luxuriant, and the country presents a beautiful green appearance. Many farmers are confident that the thorough soaking the ground has received will check the grass grub, and if the opinion is verified, the bad "spell” will be readily forgiven. There has, however, been sufficient moisture for ail purposes, and if the rain and cold continue the effects upon young stock may be serious. With regard to the rainfall, it has already been shown in these columns that the fall for the first three days of November, 1911, was greater than that for the whole month of November, 1910. A week having elapsed since the figures were given, a further comparison will be found of interest. Mr L. Lennle has been good enough to supply us with particulars : 1911. 1910.
