THE BUTTER SHORTAGE
A FURTHER, RISE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 14. The scarcity of butter, which has resulted in a considerable advance in price on the local market recently, is becoming more stringent, the supply not being ecp;al to the demand. Butter merchants to-day notified a further advance of Id per lb for butter in pound pats, making the present price Is 3)Ad per lb wholesale. Although abnormal rates are now being paid to farmers for such small supplies of butter-fat as are obtainable, the heavy cost of production leaves little margin even on present prices. The drought of autumn is approximated to have caused a loss of £350,000. DUNEDIN, July 14. To-morrow the Taieri and Peninsular Dairy Co. will increase the price of its butter (wholesale) by 2d per lb, the quotation now ruling at 16 %d per lb for fresh made prints, subject to a discount for cash, and 1614 d per lb for bulk. This price 1s the highest that has obtained in Dunedin for twelve years.
