THE POLITE AMERICAN

(Br Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright.) NEW YORK. July 13. Mr R. O. Henry criticised the Viceregal state assumed in London by the United States Ambassador, Mr Whltelaw Reid, and denounced as undemocratic the habit of appointing only wealthy men to diplomatic posts. He alluded to the story that Mr Hayes Hammond, Special American Envoy to the Coronation, nudged the King at the Foreign Office dinner, and said sarcastically that at the next Coronation which Mr Hammond attends he is sure to nudge the Queen. Mr Kahn, replying, defended American ambassadors against the charge of extravagance. The debate was adjourned.
