TROUBLE IN PORTUGAL. LONDON, July 3. The Portuguese Republicans and Monarchists have at last come into conflict. According to despatches published by the Morning Leader from its Lisbon correspondent, there has been a fierce fight between the rival forces. The battle took place near Oporto, 175 miles from Lisbon. The Republicans are reported to have had 30 killed, but it is not known what losses were suffered by the Royalists. Republican troops held the northern part of Portugal, and the Monarchists are assembled across the frontier in Spain. A LUCKY WOMAN. NEW YORK, July 3. Mrs Sigourney, of Danbury, Connecticut, whose husband is the driver of a water cart in that city, has just received news from England that she has inherited £2,000,000 and a title. The army and navy authorities tvill next month carry out a series of experiments in ordnance practice at aerial targets consisting of kites and small balloons. Hitherto, in experiments of this kind, the service rifle has been used, but in those to be made next month 3in. quickfiring guns are to bo utilised, for which the Ordnance Department has had specially designed some highly sensitised percussion shells, each weighing 1681b.
