Potatoes. —At the present time this market is very bare of potatoes, with the result that the price is now very firm at £5 10s per ton. The shortage is, however, only temporary, being due to the Waitemata, which should under ordinary circumstances have armed from the South with a heavy shipment of general produce, being delayed for, one week. As the outcome of this, merchants who expected their stocks to have been replenished ere this, find that there is a decided scarcity of potatoes, with still a week to ge before further supplies can come to hand. "While the southern markets show no change, yet the price is fully maintained, and so far there is no indication that prices will rule lower in the near future ; but it is thought that later on a decrease must take place. In seed potatoes Northern Star are still in strong demand, though a few sales of Early Puritan have taken place at £lO. Early Hose anti Up-to-date seed are meeting with about the average inquiry Oats. —The market for oats does not show an) - quotable change in the absence of export, as no inquiries are being made at present from outside the Dominion. The Southern markets are, however, reported very firm for this grain, and holders have declined for the last two months to accept any reduction on ruling rates. It is therefore not considered probable that the oat market will show much alteration until spring threshing sets in, when deliveries must become heavier. Quotations to-day are 2s lid ex wharf, and 3s ex store. Seed oats still meet with strong demand, good business being done in Algerians at 3s Sd for re-cleaned samples. Further shipments arrived from Victoria since last report by various sailing vessels. Sowing in the Aucklan ddistrict will be general during the next six weeks. The oats sown in the late autumn and early winter have done well, and are now being fed down. Chaff. —Arrivals of chaff by various vessels from Victoria have been heavy latterlv, and stocks of compressed in store have tended to weaken prices. Local chaff is now being sold for home consumption in districts away from the city. The quotation for chaff this week is £5 10s ex ship, £5 15s ex store. Southern prices for chaff are too high to promote business, added to which the heavy stocks of Victorian held locally render It unnecessary to draw any supplies from the South at present. Manures are all meeting with good demand just now. as the planting of potatoes and the sowing of oats is in full swing. Tliere is a big demand for superphosphate, which readily commands the price at present asked. A vessel is now loading in Japan and should arrive here with superpho-phate next month.
